BLACKPINK's main vocalist and lead dancer Rosé dropped her much-awaited first solo album R with single "On the Ground"—and we can't stop listening to it!
With Rosé getting hands-on from cover to songwriting of her solo debut album, "On the Ground" reflects a more vulnerable and personal side to the multi-talented performer. While fans, collectively called BLINKs, anticipated the release of the music video as well as the album earlier today, Rosé shared on YouTube's episode of RELEASED that the song was about looking for purpose in life—and that we don't need to look anywhere else to find what we need—it's already within us.
That kind of makes it a power anthem in itself, don't you think?
During a press conference earlier today, Rosé also reminisced on her pre-debut days and reflected on her passion for music while making her solo project. She said, “I reflected on myself and realized how much I love music, get comforted, and have grown with it. I wrote the songs in English as I thought it was the most fitting language for them. I hope they can comfort listeners as well.”
"On the Ground" is about love, just not the romantic kind we're used to from most of BLACKPINK's other records. With Rosé's input and personal feelings placed in the song, it's more about loving ourselves. The lyrics themselves say: I worked my whole life / Just to get high, just to realize / Everything I need is on the ground.

The performer also shared that while people expected her to release a song more in relation to love, she hoped for "On the Ground" to be powerful in itself for fans to relate to.
Rosé's R is her first solo project since her debut as part of the quartet in 2016, and it's accompanied by B-side "Gone," also an all-English track that she revealed was recorded two years ago. This is the second solo project from the group that followed BLACKPINK's main rapper and lead vocalist Jennie, who released SOLO in 2018.
