Ben&Ben dropped the music video of "Sa Susunod Na Habang Buhay" last night, December 14, and as of writing, it's already gotten over 1.6 million views and is currently the number one trending video on YouTube Philippines. The emotionally-charged video is a hit among viewers, and for good reason. Apart from Ben&Ben's music and lyrics paying tribute to a long-lost lover, and Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla's superb acting, it's actor-writer Juan Miguel Severo's screenplay that's gotten everyone raving about it.
In a video interview, Juan Miguel aka Gege shared the ~real meaning~ behind his story and said that it's about the "deterioration ng isang relationship." In the mv, we see Kath and DJ's fictional characters fall in and out of love—but the plot twist in the story is that it happens over and over again. Based on the title of the song alone, "Sa Susunod Na Habang Buhay", which translates to "in the next lifetime" in English, the narrative can be easily interpreted as a reincarnation story. Although for Gege, Kath and Daniel's characters are actually stuck in a ~time loop~, "Parang ang daling isipin na reincarnation story… Kung 'yon yung nakuha ng mga tao na reincarnation story siya, okay lang. Pero ako, para sa akin, hindi siya reincarnation but more of a time loop," he said. "Kasi originally, yung sinu-suggest namin ay basta lagi silang mauuwi sa eksena na 'yon sa beach. Pagkatapos, one of them will always die. Pagkatapos mamatay nung isa, babalik sila 'don sa first date nila. Tapos salit salit lang silang nananaginip tungkol sa isa't isa."
He further explained how the characters' love story always starts and ends in the same scene—their first date—but switching from Kath to Daniel's POV: "Kaya magsa-start yung [music video] na nagkukwento si Daniel na nananaginip siya tungkol sa isang pag-ibig na hindi pa niya nahahanap, tapos tinanong siya ni Kathryn, 'Sino yung nasa isip mo?' Sasabihin niya, 'Ikaw.' Tapos sa end [ng music video], si Daniel yung nagtanong, 'Sino yung nasa panaginip mo?' Tapos ang sasabihin niya, 'Ikaw.'"
The mv then shows the progression of their relationship from the good to the bad to the ugly: "Kasi parang ganun nga, paulit-ulit silang ganun: magde-date sila for the first time, magkakagustuhan, magkakarelasyon, masisira yung relasyon nila. Pagkatapos one of them will die 'dun sa dagat. And then, 'pag namatay sila 'ron, mababalik sila sa moment na nagkita sila sa first date, saying the same thing. And then it will repeat over and over."
A bit confused about it? Don't worry 'cause Twitter user and KathNiel fangirl, @thekntard, posted a detailed Twitter thread dissecting each scene of the mv.
We're first shown scenes of Daniel's beach dream sequence, which he narrates in beautiful spoken word poetry (a deliberate Juan Miguel Severo touch!):
We're then brought to their first date—take note of their dialogue 'cause it's repeated at the end:
Kath's character is suggested to have died which brings them back to their first date, but this time around, Kath is the one with the dream:
