This Paper Towns Cameo is Everything
BIG, FAT, MAJOR SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!
You have been warned, so if you're not game for spoilers don't continue reading beyond this point.
Augustus Waters may have died a heartbreaking death in The Fault in Our Stars, but Ansel Elgort is alive and well... and is appearing in Paper Towns as a gas station attendant. Whuuut? Yes, you read that right. He speaks two lines in the film. Two lines. Our new little infinity.
It all happened when Quentin (Nat Wolff), Ben (Austin Abrams), Radar (Justice Smith), Angela (Jaz Sinclair), and Lacey (Halston Sage) go on a road trip in search of Margo (Cara Delevingne), and they stop by a gas station to grab supplies. Standing behind the counter and sporting a giant dragon tattoo on one bicep is none other than our reel-life baby boy and dreamboat.
MTV.com had the inside story on how this cameo came about, and we can't help but wish we could watch this scene over and over and over again. "I'm pretty sure it came about at the Fault premiere or the MTV Movie Awards, I can't remember which exact event it was," Director Jake Schreier said. "Elizabeth, the head of the studio, was talking to Ansel and was saying, 'you should do a cameo.' It's one of the nice things about the producers we had on Fault and just how close everyone got and Nat and Ansel are such good friends—it sort of feels like a family. So I mean, everyone just wanted to make it happen. And then it was the question of finding the right role and the right time, so that we could work it out."
True enough, it did feel like family because John Green considers the filming day of Ansel's cameo as one of his favorite days working on Paper Towns. "We called Ansel and asked him if he wanted to be in the movie and he said yes," John said. "Ansel is a good friend of mine and a great friend of Nat's and it was a great day on set."
Aww, guys. Our hearts are melting. So you know what this means, right? You all better be at the cinemas tomorrow when Paper Towns premieres in cinemas.
