My Ex and Whys Shows How Being Cheated On Can Damage a Person

"Am I not enough? Pangit ba ako? Kapalit-palit ba ako?"

My Ex and Whys, which stars Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil as exes who find themselves working together after becoming social media-famous, asks a lot of whys: Why did he hurt me? Why couldn’t he stay faithful? Why can't she forgive me? Why can't I fix us? Why can't I move on?

Cheating is the main conflict in this love story: Cali (Liza) breaks up with Gio (Enrique) after he "accidentally" hooks up with someone else. He says he was extremely drunk, she says that's not an excuse. Years later, Cali is still full of whys, which she has channeled into her blog, The Bakit List. The opposing comments from her fans and bashers show just how different people can have different answers to her thought-provoking questions.

But if there's one thing that we can all agree on (hopefully), it's that being cheated on can destroy a person, no matter the gender. There is one scene—that meme-famous one—where Cali breaks down in front of Gio, every horrible thought flooding out of her. "Am I not enough? Pangit ba ako? Kapalit-palit ba ako?" She was furious at him, yes, but she also blamed herself even though she did nothing wrong. Even though the act of cheating is a reflection of the cheater's character, not the aggrieved party's. She couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, couldn't function, and years later, the pain from that betrayal still poisoned her thoughts and actions.

"Am I not enough? Pangit ba ako? Kapalit-palit ba ako?"

People have different takes on why people cheat, and why a cheater can or cannot change their ways. A discussion on this subject can get ugly, but perhaps we can approach the topic with a different question: how would you feel if the tables were turned? How would you feel if it was your trust that was betrayed, or if you were the one asking for forgiveness?
