Did you hear about Jem and the Holograms being made into a movie? Honestly I'm not familiar with the '80s cartoon series and toy line—in fact, I only know about it from a Christmas party when the Candy team dressed up as the characters. Throwback photos here! Aren't they the cutest?

I may not know much about it, but a quick Tumblr search shows that fans all over the world are excited for the live-action remake. Here are seven reasons why you should be, too.

  1. Before there was Hannah Montana, there was Jem. Lead singer of the group, Jem is actually the alter ego of record executive Jerrica Benton. Jerrica projects the Jem hologram onto herself with the help of her souped-up earrings. In the remake, Jerrica is "an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation." According to The Hollywood Reporter, "she and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt—one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father."

  2. It's the ultimate #throwback party. Big hair, flashy makeup, massive production—"truly outrageous," as Jem and the Holograms would say. If the movie comes out this year, you have the perfect Halloween costume idea for you and your barkada! And check out their crayon-colored hair—isn't it interesting how trends are really cyclical?

Here's the cast practicing their hair flips:

  3. There will be a lot of singing. The original theme song is kind of silly, but so catchy. "Jem is my name / No one else is the same / Jem is my name!"

  4. It's the perfect movie to watch on girls' night out. You'll relate to the Holograms, who are Jem's sisters and band mates. I don't have a sister and I've never been in a band, but I imagine being in a band with sisters is twice as stressful yet twice as fun. Dealing with mean girls? Jem and the Holograms are too, and they're aptly called The Misfits.

  5. It features probably the strangest love triangle since Jacob, Bella, and Renesmee. Okay, those three were never really a love triangle, according to the Twilight verse rules, but it was the first thing that came to mind when I read about Jerrica's love triangle with road manager Rio and... herself, as in, Jem. Apparently, Rio doesn't know that Jerrica and Jem are the same person, and Jerrica is afraid to tell him the truth. Bizarre love triangle is bizarre.

Oh, and guess who's playing Rio? Ryan Guzman from Step Up Revolution and Pretty Little Liars—Aria's ex, the cute martial arts instructor!

  6. You might know the cast already. Jem is Aubrey Peeples, who plays teen queen wannabe Layla on Nashville; Kimber is Stefanie Scott from A.N.T. Farm; Aja is Hayley Kiyoko, Elena and Caroline's college roommate who died on The Vampire Diaries; and Shana is relative newcomer Aurora Perrineau.
