You may not notice it, but default fonts have a lot more impact on users than you might think, and Microsoft is making a crucial change to theirs. On April 28, the tech giant announced that, after 14 years, they will now be replacing their default font, Calibri, with a new design.
"A default font is often the first impression we make; it’s the visual identity we present to other people via our resumes, documents, or emails," Microsoft explains. "And just as people and the world around us age and grow, so too should our modes of expression."
Calibri became the default font of Microsoft Office apps back in 2007, when it replaced the classic Times New Roman. To replace Calibri, Microsoft presented five new choices for the new default font: Tenorite, Bierstadt, Skeena, Seaford, and Grandview. And, get this, users will have a say in what gets selected as the official new default font. All you have to do is head to their Twitter page and let them know which font you think is the best default font.
Each of the new choices are original and commissioned by Microsoft. "The new fonts span the various sans-serif styles—humanist, geometric, swiss-style, and industrial," they explain. They also assure users that all five fonts, regardless of whether they are chosen as the default, will be available for use across the Microsoft Office apps. And a little bit of good news for Calibri enthusiasts: the font will also remain available for use!Â
