On February 23, 2021, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and his team distributed learning materials for 5,851 daycare students. Through his social media account, he celebrated this accomplishment but still acknowledged the struggle of receiving quality education during the COVID-19 pandemic. He states that there are less enrollees this year and not having face-to-face classes might be hard but he commits by saying “gagawin [niya] ang lahat para di tumigil ang edukasyon ng mga kabataan.”
Netizens were quick to point out and commend Mayor Vico for not putting his face on these materials. One said, “Gusto ko talaga ung walang muka ng politiko hindi nakakailang gamitin(sic).” To which, Mayor Vico jokingly said that if he does so, the kids might just draw on his face. He said, “Maglagay ako ng mukha ko dyan baka drawingan lang ng mga bata ng bigote!”
LOL! He’s not wrong though. Most of us have done it in the past—who here is also guilty of drawing moustaches and beards on your grade school books?
This isn’t the first time Mayor Vico has spoken up against self-promotion. Just last weekend, he went viral because of his appearance in Alex Gonzaga’s vlog. “Hindi ako mahilig sa mga picture ko,” he states. “Atsaka, pag project ng LGU, bawal maglagay ng malaking pangalan ko. Bawal ‘yon. Kasi pera ng taumbayan iyon, e. Bakit ako maglalagay ng pangalan ko?”
Mayor Vico mentions that his constituents shouldn’t see good governance as “utang na loob” and they can simply thank and commend the projects and programs these officials implement. To quote him, “Puwede tayo magpasalamat na, ‘Maganda ‘yung proyekto, maganda ‘yung programa.’ Pero wala tayong utang na loob. Iba ‘yun.”
It’s evident that this is a constant practice for Mayor Vico since he there have been multiple occasions of him correcting netizens and asking them to thank Pasig taxpayers instead of him.
