Actress and recording artist Maris Racal isn't one to shy away from stepping out of her comfort zone, and her latest single "Ate Sandali" is a testament to that. The single, which dropped on June 23, is the first to drop from her upcoming mini album under Rico Blanco's Balcony Entertainment. According to Maris, it was a song she wrote when she was younger, and it was inspired by her and her sister's heartbreaks.

The song is described as a "power-pop song" which deviates away from the type of music Maris has released in the past. During the press conference for her new single, Maris admitted that "Ate Sandali" wasn't exactly the type of song she wanted to release years ago when she first wrote it.

''I couldn't see myself doing pop songs," Maris tells Candy. "I grew up listening to ano kasi, mga bands, The Beatles." She also explained how she used to prefer releasing classic and accoustic types of songs.

During the pandemic, however, Maris got into K-pop, Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande, which helped her get through quarantine just like many of us. This prompted her to revisit the old pop song she wrote and reconsider releasing it to the public.

Aside from turning away from her usual genre (and incorporating her native tongue Bisaya into the song), Maris shared that she added something new to the song to add a more modern and "in" element to it: she incorporated a rap verse, and it's her very first time doing so!

Maris told Candy, "First time kong magsulat ng gano'n! Na-challenge ako kasi, you know, as I mentioned earlier, this is my take on what's trending right now. Masu-surprise talaga yung fans ko dito kasi I never released music na may rap."

Maris shared how much pressure she felt over making sure it was something she'd be proud of, which is why she really gave ger 100 percent in writing it. "Nako, si Shanti Dope mapapakinggan yung music ko, si Gloc-9, mapapakinggan. So yung rap talaga parang, 'Oh my gosh, gagalingan ko 'to,' I had to write it over and over again."
