If you've been keeping up with the latest music releases, then chances are, you probably have Olivia Rodrigo's "Drivers License" on repeat just like us. Rodrigo, the 17-year-old half-Filipino, half-American star of Disney+'s High School Musical TV spinoff (called High School Musical: The Musical: The Series), just dropped the song as her first ever single and it's already dominating the charts. The song even broke Spotify's record for the most streamed track in a week.Â
Aside from being the perfect anthem for broken hearts, the song is also gaining attention for its supposed backstory. According to media outlets and fans on social media, the song seems to be alluding to Rodrigo's HSMTMTS co-star/love interest/alleged ex, Joshua Bassett, and his rumored new girlfriend, Disney star Sabrina Carpenter.
Avid fans of the HSM series saw certain parts of the song's lyrics as a telling evidence that it's pertaining to the two other Disney stars. For instance, "I got my driver's license last week / Just like we always talked about" pertains to an interview Rodrigo did where she was explaining how she and Bassett celebrated when they found out that the song they co-wrote, "Just A Moment", will be used in the series. Rodrigo, at that time, did not have a driver's permit so she shares that Bassett took her in his car and had her drive around the In N' Out parking lot.

Another part of the lyrics supposedly alludes to Sabrina Carpenter, singer and star of Disney's Girl Meets World. The lyrics in question is "And you're probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She's so much older than me / She's everything I'm insecure about". Carpenter, 21, was pictured out and about with Bassett in August 2020.Â
Despite theories going viral on various social media platforms, Rodrigo hasn't confirmed anything about the source of the heartbreak that inspired her now hit song. The milestones that song has reached still feel unreal to the singer-songwriter.
