Now a college freshman, Leon Barretto is learning to manage his time between studies and showbiz. And like most working students, he’s finding the transition to college a lot more difficult than he expected.
In his most recent YouTube vlog, the 18-year-old got candid about the stress he experienced during his very first college semester.
“If I were to be completely frank, I’ve been stressed [and] anxious because of school. I’ve been overwhelmed with a lot of the workload that college has been giving. It’s been [a] really, completely different environment compared to high school,” he shared.
“I’m still trying to learn to balance my life with college because there is a lot of workload and there’s more pressure and the standards are much higher. The profs, the teachers are much stricter. It’s taking a toll a lot on my mental health,” he added, recounting that he would sometimes stay up until 5 a.m. just to keep up with his schoolwork.
Fortunately, Leon’s feeling better now that he’s taking a semestral break. Still, he acknowledged that he should prioritize his mental well-being over his perfectionist tendencies as he completes the rest of his freshman year.
“This coming semester or the remaining terms, I just feel like it’s important for me to actually take care of myself. By doing so, I’m not going to beat myself up when it comes to doing my school work,” he concluded.
After graduating high school with honors last year, Leon is now taking up a marketing course at University of Asia and the Pacific. Meanwhile, his older sister Claudia Barretto is currently a BS Psychology senior at Ateneo de Manila University.
