"I told my girlfriend we should break up, so I could play the role."

Where some actors magically transform into their roles at the snap of a finger, others opt to stay in character even when they're off-camera. For his part, Hotel del Luna’s Lee Do Hyun undoubtedly practices the latter.

The 25-year-old, who finally found his big break after playing Ko Choeng-myung on the 2019 TVN hit series, got candid during an interview with Esquire Korea a few months back. According to Do Hyun, he tends to go full on method that it’s difficult for him to step out of his character even when filming is over. Heck, he even admits to still addressing IU as Man-wol to this day! “She’s saved as Man-wol in my contacts. Strangely, it’s more comfortable,” he says.

In fact, Do Hyun often blurs the line between his craft and his personal life, so much so that he once ended up breaking his now ex-girlfriend’s heart. The actor recounted the story for his magazine feature, stating that it happened while filming an upcoming Korean drama titled Sweet Home.

“The character I was playing was someone who lost the girl they love. So I told my girlfriend we should break up, so I could play the role. I really don’t know why I did that,” explains Do hyun. “I was about 21 or 22. Of course, my girlfriend didn’t understand. She asked me if I was crazy. But at the time, acting came first for me… Anyway, after experiencing things like that, I think I’ve grown a lot.” Safe to say, he’s reached a whole new level of dedication.

Hot off his Hotel de Luna success, Do Hyun currently stars in JTBC’s 18 Again, a series adaptation of Zac Efron’s 2009 comedy film 17 Again.
