It’s no secret that Kyline Alcantara has already made a name for herself—landing roles in more than 15 films and teleseryes, and establishing over a decade-long career at just 20 years old. However, providing for her family wasn’t always easy for the child star.
In the recent episode of MavLine On Me, a podcast she shares with her on-screen partner Mavy Legaspi, the actress gets real about the reality of starting out in showbiz and the struggles of establishing a successful acting career.
“Yung first [talent fee] ko [as an] extra, 500 pesos. Tapos may 50% cut pa yung talent coordinator, so 250 nalang,” she shares. “Kapag kakain kami ni mama sa karinderya, isang tilapya lang tapos tig-isang side kami, tapos isang kanin.”
According to Kyline, she was once discriminated against by a director for being a “probinsyana,” and this pushed her to work harder and prove her worth in the entertainment industry.
“Yung nag-push talaga sa akin na I want to be known in this industry, I wanted to be respected in this industry [ay] nag-start sa isang direktor na pinahiya ako [pati] si mama. Sa gitna ng set, sa harap ng lahat ng tao. Nung time na ‘yun, dini-discriminate ako kasi probinsyana ako,” she says.
“Yun yung motivation [ko] na, ah hindi ko hahayaan na ganito ako tratuhin ng ibang tao, so I worked really hard.”
Even though the actress admits that the judgments never really went away, she takes pride in saying that she knows how to handle them better now.
“Until now, marami pa din judgments, I just trained my mind not to give a lot of attention to those judgments. Kasi, at least now, I know myself,” she adds.
We’re so proud of you and everything you have achieved, Kyline!
