It's not uncommon for musicians to write love songs when they like someone. But interestingly, musician and entrepreneur Jim Bacarro wrote a "hate song" about his now-wife Saab Magalona-Bacarro during their college days.
Saab and Jim both attended Ateneo de Manila University for college, and back then, Jim was in a band called Ernville. In an interview with Summit Media editors, Jim and Saab shared with Candy the back story behind the hate song, and it's actually really cute.
Saab's then-boyfriend is friends with Jim, and Jim found it annoying that he would always ditch them for Saab. And as a musician, what else could Jim do? Write a song, of course. A hate song, to be exact. "It was called 'Simangot,'" Saab says. "I had no idea it was about me. My college boyfriend kasi was his friend and parang it was the mentality na, your friend's girlfriend keeps taking him away from your boy time and so he didn't lilke me kasi parang, my boyfriend back then would ditch them for me."
Saab eventually found out that the song was actually pertaining to her. She shares, "Nakakatawa kasi I would go to their gigs to support and then, I found out one of your friend's sister told me na parang, 'Do you know that song's about you?' Sabi ko, 'What did I ever do to him?'"
But as it turns out, Jim didn't really ~hate~ Saab. "He did the super mature thing which was to write a song about me and how annoyed he was with me, but in reality, he was just annoyed that he wasn't with me. 'Yun pala."
Years later, they ended up together. And now, they have a beautiful family with Pancho and Vito. But don't worry, there's no bad blood between Saab's then-boyfriend and Jim. "Everything worked out well with my college boyfriend by the way," Saab says. "He was an offerer at our wedding."
And Jim would also like to point out that this was ~years~ ago. "I'd just like to reiterate, this was in college."
In 2013, Jim formed the seven-member rock band Cheats which includes Saab on vocals. In 2015, the two got married in Baguio. They have two kids, Pancho and Vito. They are also behind the popular podcast Wake Up With Jim And Saab.
