If you’re the type to keep tabs on the local entertainment scene, you’ve probably already heard that Janella Salvador is ready to make her big showbiz comeback. Now preparing to star as Valentina in the upcoming Darna series, the 24-year-old actress has been making a lot of headlines these days. With her large social media following and widespread popularity, it’s highly likely that you’ve already spotted this multi-talented star on television or online.
But just in case you haven’t, here are five fast facts to help you get acquainted with Janella:
1. Janella came from a showbiz family.
Like some well-known Gen Z stars today, Janella was exposed to the showbiz industry at a very young age because of her parents. ICYDK, Janella’s actually the daughter of West End musical actress Jenine Desiderio and Rage Band lead singer Juan Miguel Salvador. Since her parents are both big names in the OPM world, Janella naturally fell in love with Pinoy music and films as well while she was growing up. Before she even became a teen actress, Janella was already dreaming of starring in her own teleserye with Daniel Padilla.
2. Janella started out as a commercial actress.
Although Janella only officially joined the industry when she was 14 years old, she has been working on TV guestings, theater productions, and local commercials since she was a kid. Remember when she used to do those cute commercials for Palmolive and Lemon Square Cheese Cake? Apart from that, she also performed in some GMA Network shows like Eat Bulaga! and Walang Tulugan with the Master Showman.
Inspired by her favorite teleseryes Ina, Kapatid, Anak and Princess and I, Janella made her television debut in Be Careful With My Heart last 2012. The following year, she joined Star Magic Circle alongside fellow teen actresses such as Liza Soberano, Julia Barretto, and Khalil Ramos. She finally bagged her very first lead television role in 2015 as Sophie in Oh My G!, which eventually led to her first big screen role in Haunted Mansion. From there, Janella went on to star in FPJ's Ang Probinsyano, The Killer Bride, Touch Screen, and Born For You.
In addition to her acting credits, Janella’s also an award-winning performer! Some of her awards include New Movie Actress of the Year for Haunted Mansion at the 32nd PMPC Star Awards for Movies, Princess of Philippine Television for The Killer Bride at 51st GMMSF Box-Office Entertainment Awards, and Female Rising Star at Candy Readers' Choice Awards.
3. Janella is also a talented singer.
Growing up in a family of musicians, Janella’s penchant for singing came naturally. She recorded her first-ever song “Mahal Kita Pero” in 2014 while she was still a member of girl group ASAP IG with Liza and Kathryn Bernardo. A year later, she made her official music debut with a self-titled album that featured covers of “Dear Heart,” “Kapag Tumibok ang Puso,” and other OPM classics. Beyond being an OPM singer, Janella was also chosen by Disney to cover the Philippine releases of two of their songs, namely “Happily Ever After” and “How Far I’ll Go.”
4. Janella was previously in three different love teams.
The success of Janella’s debut show Be Careful With My Heart was thanks in part to her chemistry with her on-screen partner Marlo Mortel. Dubbed MarNella by their fans, the tandem went on to star in Oh My G! and Haunted Mansion after their initial success. Come 2017, however, Janella was paired with Elmo Magalona in local films Bloody Crayons and My Fairy Tail Love Story. In spite of a warm reception from fans, Janella and Elmo eventually broke up after a year. Her tandem with Joshua Garcia soon emerged due to Killer Bride, but the JoshNella fandom eventually died down after she got pregnant with Markus Paterson’s baby. Now, JoshNella fans are looking forward to seeing Janella and Joshua reunite again in Darna!
5. Janella loves animals.
Like her mom, Janella loves taking care of animals! Apart from adopting stray cats, she’s also cared for birds, chickens, and hamsters before. Currently, she owns two pet snakes! Apparently, she promised herself that she’d finally buy a pet snake if she got the Valentina role in Darna.
