How Thor Got Better

Thor: The Dark World is not the best Marvel movie in existence, but it is heaps better than the first one. It’s basically an entertaining escape for two hours, and isn’t that why we go to the movies?

  • It’s bigger, grittier, funnier. I think I got a bit of whiplash in that epic fight scene where they jumped from realm to realm, but wow, talk about out of this world. And Loki, everyone’s favorite villain, has the best lines. “Oh dear. Is she dead?”
  • Finally, some chemistry. Let's get real: Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) have zero chemistry together. (Maybe it's the long-distance thing?) But this time, it's offset by the chemistry between Darcy the intern (Kat Dennings) and Ian the intern's intern (Jonathan Howard). And you can always count on the bromance between Thor and Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and among Thor and Asgard's Warriors Three.
  • Surprises for geeks. Who would've thought that Chuck Bartowski could one day become a blonde Asgardian? Zachary Levi took over Fandral's role when Josh Dallas couldn't return for the sequel, and I hope they make this a permanent thing. Nothing against Josh Dallas, but that's Chuck Freaking Barwoski. Christopher Eccleston (big baddie Malekith) is another welcome addition, if only because he will forever be the Ninth Doctor in my eyes. As for the biggest surprise, all hail Captain America! That was such a cool cameo.
  • Loki steals every scene—as usual. There is a reason why he figures so prominently in all three Marvel movies he' been in. Tom Hiddleston brings heart and humor and complexity to the table—onscreen and in real life. Have you seen that video of Loki arguing with some kids? How about Tom's dance showdown with Zachary (see below)? It's Loki/Tom's world and we just live in it.
