KDLex is one of the most promising love teams of this generation. But even though KD Estrada and Alexa Ilacad are successful in their showbiz careers, that doesn't stop them from pursuing other interests such as performing in theater.
ICYDK, the two will actually be starring in the musical play Walang Aray, which is written by Rody Vera and directed by Ian Segarra.
Before KDLex landed their roles for the play, they were just fans of musicals like all of us. When asked about how they got their roles during her most recent YouTube vlog, Alexa responded that it all started when she and KD watched musicals in New York with the ABS-CBN's TV Production Head Laurenti Dyogi—aka Direk Lauren.
Following their meeting in New York, the director was aware of Alexa and KD's interest in Broadway plays, so Alexa received a random call from Direk Lauren about the opportunity to act in a play. Alexa recalled, “Alam ni Direk Lauren kung gaano kami na-inspire.”
She continued, “One day nag-message si Direk Lauren, sabi niya ‘Hey, are you and KD free? Tara, meet tayo.’ Nakwento lang niya na there’s an offer from PETA for Walang Aray and they wanted us.”
Although Alexa has always wanted to try theater acting, she had doubts about whether or not to take on the role. She admitted, “Humingi ako kay Lord ng sign kasi I really wanna do it. It would bring me so much pride to say that I successfully starred in a musical.”
Fortunately, the young star was able to convince herself to take the part, thanks to random quotes on social media! Alexa shared, “Ang galing, so I was scrolling on Instagram the next day, then I saw a post–-‘If the only thing stopping you is fear, then why don’t you explore it?’ I don’t want to let anxiety grab this opportunity away from me.”
She also expressed her admiration for other theater performers because of how talented they are. Alexa mentioned, “Sobrang galing nila as in! Ang galing nilang lahat kaya mas nagenjoy kami ni KD kasi ang dami naming natutunan sa kanila. Iba talaga ang respeto ko sa mga theater actors.”
There’s a huge difference between acting for theater and for television, so the role is truly an achievement for Alexa and KD. We can’t wait to see them both act in the play as Julia and Tenyong!
