If you’re aware of the international gaming scene, then you might have heard of Valkyrae. Valkyrae is a fan-favorite gamer and streamer with over 2 million followers on Instagram and 1.41 million subscribers on YouTube. Recently, she’s been streaming the popular game Among Us on her YouTube channel with fellow streamers all around the world.
Is she your favorite video game streamer? Here are other interesting things you might not know about her:
Valkyrae’s real name is *not* Rae.
Valkyrae’s real name is Rachel Hofstetter. In a video, she admitted that she thought Rae would have been a cute nickname for her (But no one IRL called her that!). She wanted to incorporate “Rae” into her username and also found the word “valkyrie” really cool and apt for the gaming scene, so she ended up merging them together.
Valkyrae has Filipino blood.
Rachel is half-Pinay, half-German. She also has a sister who’s two years younger than her and works as a dental hygienist. Although they're working in very different industries and fields, Rachel says she has so much love for her younger sis.
Valkyrae is 28 years old.
Rachel is 28, though she admits that many of her followers think she looks waaay younger. She attributes this to her Asian genes.
Valkyrae started on Instagram.
Valkyrae’s first time sharing her love for gaming was when she opened an Instagram account dedicated to her hobby six years ago. Back then, she wasn't a streamer yet and would only post about the games she liked to play.
She eventually learned about streaming through her IG community and decided to try her hand at it. Eventually, Valkyrae became a popular streamer on Twitch and spent years on the platform. On January 2020, she signed an exclusive deal with YouTube and has been streaming exclusively on that platform ever since.
She was able to pay debt through Twitch earnings.
Prior to landing the YouTube deal, Valkyrae’s income largely depended on ad revenues, donations, and sponsorships from her Twitch streaming. Throughout the years, she was able to earn enough to eventually support her family and pay off her mother's debt, according to Business Insider.
She's still making a steady income now that she's exclusively streaming on YouTube. “I make enough to live comfortably and to donate to others,” shares Rachel in a YouTube video.
Valkyrae dated fellow streamer Sonii.
She and gamer Sonii had been in an on-and-off relationship. They initially dated for three years and broke up for the first time in 2018. They got back together but ultimately broke up again a year later and went their separate ways. They're on good terms with each other, however, and still appreciate and support each other in their respective endeavors.
Valkyrae plays all sorts of games.
Valkyrae has been streaming and playing all sorts of video games, from Fortnite, League of Legends, IRL, Teamfight Tactics, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and more. On her very first foray into gaming, she shared that it was her mom who initially got her interested in playing video games back when she was just six years old. Her first gaming console was a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) which her mom got for her.
Valkyrae is candid about the struggles of being a female streamer.
In an interview with Business Insider, Rachel has expressed her worries about being a woman in a largely male-dominated industry. "No matter what you do to cover up, it never ends. There’s always going to be trolls, judging based on your looks, just saying sexist things because I’m a girl and they think it's funny," she shares.
As an internet celebrity who's always in the public eye, she also admitted in a Q&A on her channel that her biggest frustration as a streamer would be "worrying all the time about safety."
Her streaming squad includes Sykkuno, Disguised Toast, and Day6's Jae, among others.
It's fun to see different streamers come together to play and interact in games. Rachel often gathers her internet friends for a round of games which fans always look forward to. Recently, she's been streaming a lot with fellow gamers Pokimane, Sykkuno, Disguised Toast, and even K-pop idol Jae from Day6.
She's into anime.
Aside from video games, Rachel is also interested in anime. Her top five picks are Hunter x Hunter, Demon Slayer, The Promised Neverland, Made in Abyss, and My Hero Academia.
