For an episode filled with destruction, betrayals, and earth-shattering revelations, there were also a lot of moments that were almost too pure for this world. But that has always been one of the show's greatest strengths: showing that no matter how bleak things may seem, there's still a lot of good worth fighting for (...also, it can get so much worse and a magical zombie dragon could spell the end of mankind, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves). Here are moments between a few of our favorite characters in the season finale that feel like a mug of hot choco with mini marshmallows that we need this rainy, dreary season.
Tyrion and Podrick's reunion
Before he became Brienne's squire, Podrick was Tyrion's loyal squire who saved his life at the Battle of the Blackwater. They last saw each other when Tyrion was in jail for supposedly murdering his nephew Joffrey. Now, Tyrion is the Hand of the Dragon Queen, while Podrick is a well-trained squire whose loyalty still knows no bounds. They fondly meet again in the finale, as House Targaryen, House Stark, and House Lannister come together for tense negotiations. Talk about "a pleasant surprise in an unpleasant situation."
Brienne and the Hound's reunion
The last time these two saw each other, they were engaged in an intense swordfight basically over who should protect Arya. Brienne won but Arya slipped away, and now Arya is a badass wolf who can protect herself quite well, thank you very much. The proud look on their faces as Brienne caught up the Hound on Arya's progress is priceless—like two parents learning that their kid was just named valedictorian of the class.
Tyrion and Bronn's reunion
So many reunions during this short walk to the negotiations, including Tyrion and Bronn’s. They were able to talk for a bit when Bronn arranged a secret meeting between Tyrion and Jaime two episodes ago, but it’s only now that we see their signature banter from when Bronn was Tyrion's champion and bodyguard. It's good to see these two together again, even if it was just for a short while.
Theon and Jon's heart-to-heart
Theon is well-aware that he's been an awful person and a traitor to House Stark. Even if he has somewhat redeemed himself by helping Sansa escape, he still feels a lot of guilt, as any decent person would. The first time Jon saw him after everything went down, it took everything he had to not beat Theon senseless, but now that he’s had some time and now that Theon is truly repentant, he has forgiven Theon for what he has the right to. "You're a Greyjoy...and you're a Stark" is the kindest, most empowering thing he could say to Theon.
Arya and Sansa's teamwork
There had been fan speculation that Arya and Sansa were only pretend-fighting to outsmart the manipulative Littlefinger, but that scene in Arya's bedroom seemed a bit much, and hello, there was no one there to witness their intense face-off. This is why the plot twist that it wasn't Arya who was being judged and sentenced by Sansa, but Littlefinger was the best. Thing. Ever. Littlefinger's surprised look, Arya's triumphant smirk, Sansa's matter-of-fact rundown of his crimes, Bran's mystical assist—everything was perfect. If there's one thing that makes us feel good more than reunions, it's the teamwork between and the justice served by these sisters.
Jon (sorry, we're not calling him Aegon anytime soon) and Dany's quiet moment
We're not talking about THAT boat scene because while part of us ships these two, part of us is also screaming, you guys are aunt and nephew! Confirmed!!! But also, Targaryen culture celebrates incest??? Nope, that scene definitely did not make us feel warm and fuzzy—just seriously conflicted. We're also not talking about the negotiations, when Jon refused to lie and un-bend the knee to Dany, even for the sake of the war against the undead. (Noble but stupid, very Ned Stark of him.) It was that quiet moment while waiting for Tyrion to change Cersei's mind, when Jon was saying that Dany is different, she's still here, there's still hope for her family line, they can get a second opinion about her infertility from someone who isn't a vengeful witch. That rare light moment they shared after discussing the bleakness of their situation is so sweet...and we're back to feeling conflicted.
