Now that the holiday break is upon us, we have quite some time to start relaxing which inevitably includes binge watching… and now, we have some recommendations that you can add to your to-watch list, especially for our rom-com obsessed Candy girls. I don’t know about you, but my personal favorite thing to see in movies is seeing the friends-to-lovers trope come to life. It’s the endless questioning of will they or will they not, are they just friends or is it something more… Nothing beats that kind of kilig!

Here are some friends-to-lovers films that are sure to make your heart clench in frustration and kilig:

Love, Rosie

In my opinion, this is one of the most superior friends-to-lovers films out there. In this film, we see the progression of Alex and Rosie’s unique bond that begins in high school and their endless instances of miscommunication which results in them ending up in different relationships despite it being totally obvious that they want to be together. This film will keep you at the edge of your seat because it will keep you asking: So will they end up together? Will they not?

When Harry Met Sally

It might be a mortal sin to talk about the friends-to-lovers trope without mentioning this iconic film. Despite this film being over 30 years old, it remains a classic until today in the romcom world. Harry and Sally first meet as college students in which they argue on whether or not men and women can be platonic friends. Five years later, they meet again on a plane ride where they are both in happy relationships. 10 years later, they meet once again in a bookstore but now they’re both single. They decide to become friends and of course, they end up being one another’s go-to person… then the complicated part comes in: the feelings!

13 Going on 30

This film is definitely made for all those girls who are into the popular girl and nerdy guy match-up. Thirteen-year-old Jenna yearns to be a part of the popular group in school. Matt, her best friend, gifts her a pink dollhouse with a packet of magic wishing dust. Long story short, she transformed into a grown-up overnight with her dream life: 30, flirty, and thriving. However, in this alternate universe, it seems that she and Matt are no longer friends. Throughout the film, viewers can watch Jenna fall in love with Matt despite him being engaged. The plot twist of this film will knock your socks off, but here’s a small spoiler: it’s a happy ending. :)

Always Be My Maybe

There’s a certain kind of kilig that you get when former lovers reconnect, especially when the spark and the friendship is just as palpable! Childhood sweethearts Marcus and Sasha run into one another after 15 years since their breakup, and they choose to become friends, but here’s the catch: they struggle to adjust to each other’s lives. Nothing hurts more than fighting for a relationship where you can’t control other external factors, but that’s why it hurts so good!

Love is Color Blind

Who doesn’t love a good Filipino film? And with Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano as the leads! How could one resist? Young artist Ino becomes colorblind, only seeing colors in black and white. His best friend, Cara, makes it her life’s mission to bring color back into his life again. Add in the ever bittersweet selosan, and you have the perfect rom-com. ;) The silent pining and the endless push-and-pull dynamic is sure to tug at your heartstrings.
