Do you still remember the first time you had a crush on someone? It could have been as simple as a childhood crush or maybe it's the kind that led you to your ~first love~. Either way, there’s something special about firsts, and that applies to boy bands.
The first time you had to look up each member’s name, your first favorite member or as we like to call it these days: bias (because we know all too well the dilemma of having to choose a fave among all five 1D members #OT5Forever), the first time you attended their concert… Ah, good times.
Below, we’re taking a walk down memory lane as our followers open up about the first ever boy band they decided to stan. Grabe, All. The. Feels.
Ah, major throwback! Before our generation had One Direction, there was Westlife. The Irish boy band consists of Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, and former member Brian McFadden. The group disbanded in 2012 but came back to reunite again in 2018, and fans are still just as loyal. “I basically grew up with their songs, so until now I’m loving their new releases,” shares @ellekiryuu_13xx.
Seoul-based boy band EXO is one of the most popular K-pop groups today. Currently, the group consists of Xiumin, Suho, Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun. From visuals to dance moves, EXO can slay at anything. “At first, t’was the visuals and vocals. But as time goes by, I am loving them because they love us, too!” EXO-L @joseyaaa shares.
Honestly, it’s not a roundup of boy bands if One Direction isn’t in it! Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and former member Zayn Malik all started out as contestants on the British singing competition The X Factor before being launched into global stardom. One fan, @pinosnm, says, “I became a fan since they had fun music and they really made me happy.”
In 2015, months after Zayn’s departure from the band, it was announced that the group would be taking an indefinite hiatus. While they each went on to pursue successful solo careers, fans are still clamoring for the group to reunite again as OT5. “They changed my life when I was 18 and [been] a fan of theirs for so long,” Directioner @anaqbarrios shares.
Another K-pop group converting casual listeners into fans is iKON, a boy band from the same entertainment agency who formed Bigbang, 2NE1, and Blackpink. iKON originally started as a seven-member boy group with B.I, Jay, Song, Bobby, DK, June, and Chan before the departure of the group’s leader B.I. Many of the group’s members have participated in the writing of their songs, especially the group’s two rappers, B.I and Bobby. “I love how they work hard on writing their songs. Too bad they’re underrated,” says @fernandopatchi_.
Arguably one of the most popular South Korean boy groups is Bangtan Sonyeondan, or BTS for short. “I was captivated by their choreography and music. They are humble, too!” says @magpantaypola.
The group—made up of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—are known for spreading their message of self-love and self-expression which inspired millions of fans all over the world. In 2018, the group made an appearance at the UN General Assembly in New York where leader RM, aka Kim Namjoon, delivered an inspiring speech to today’s youth. “I’m struggling to love myself and their songs helped me and taught me how to love myself. <3” shares @gimeelynneg.
Three-piece boy band Jonas Brothers practically grew up with us. “Super crush ko si Joe nung 8 years old ako hahahaha,” @lissamarieflores shares. (TBH, who didn’t have a crush on Joe?)
Brothers Kevin, Joe, and Nick began as a pop rock band in their teenage years and went on to star in a Disney movie called Camp Rock. In 2013, the group announced their split as a band. But six years later, the brothers got back together as a musical unit, announcing the reunion through a week-long takeover of The Late Late Show with James Corden.
Before You Exit
Another band of brothers people loved is Before You Exit, made up of Connor, Riley, and Toby McDonough. Originally, the boy band also included former members Braiden Montgomery Wood and Thomas Christian Silvers.
Fans love them not just because they are talented musicians, but also because they’re inspiring in other aspects through their own personal endeavors. “Lemme cry first! They literally got me hooked the first time I saw them on MYX. And mind you, they all graduated from college with flying colors! Brb, just got TOO motivated to study. Plus, I love how they work together as brothers—so driven and full of warmth!” shares @yyenthh.
