Elliot Page is sharing his truth to the public. On December 2, 2020, the actor came out as transgender on his social media accounts. "I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot." Following his announcement, his social media handles on Twitter and Instagram have also changed to reflect his name change.
Elliot, who is previously known as Ellen, expressed his gratitude for the people who have shown him support in his journey, but also asked everyone for privacy and patience. "My joy is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared," he says.
He also used this time to express support to the rest of the LGBTQIA+ community and recognize the trans people who have had to face abuse, harassment, and self-loathing on a daily basis because of their sexualities. He vowed to use his platform to "change this world for the better."
Transgender describes people whose gender identity is different from the sex that they were assigned at birth. The sex of a person is determined by their sex chromosomes; males have one X and one Y chromosomes while females have two X chromosomes.

Gender identity, on the other hand, refers to one's personal and internal view of themselves with regards to the gender spectrum. One's gender identity does not necessarily correspond with the sex they were assigned at birth. According to studies, there is significant evidence behind the claim that gender identity can be influenced by both biological and environmental factors.
For many transgender people, expressing their authentic self can be represented by changing their names, using their preferred pronouns, and even dressing up in clothing they feel more comfortable in.Â

Being queer in the entertainment industry
Elliot's journey in the entertainment industry was filled with pressure to stay closeted. "I was distinctly told, by people in the industry, when I started to become known: ‘People cannot know you’re gay,’" he tells Porter in a 2019 interview. "But I will never let anyone put me in anything I feel uncomfortable in ever again."
Elliot came out as gay in 2014 during a Human Rights campaign, hoping to insire and send a message of hope to those who are also experiencing similar struggles with their sexuality. In 2018, Elliot married choreographer and dancer Emma Portner.
Following his announcement in 2020, Variety reports that Netflix is in the process of updating Elliot's credits in all his films and shows that are available for streaming on the platform. Elliot currently plays Vanya Hargreeves in the Netflix series Umbrella Academy. He also starred in films like Juno (which earned him a nomination at the Academy Awards), Inception, Flatliners, and the X-Men series by Marvel.
