DepEd's Full Statement on Connecting Suicides of Teachers, Students to Distance Learning

The government agency says, "Suicide is a sensitive and complex issue."

The Department of Education has released a statement with an appeal to the public to stop connecting recent reports of teacher and student suicides to distance learning.

“Suicide is a sensitive and complex issue. We would like to appeal to everyone to stop directly connecting such to modules and distance learning.”

The statement added, “We caution the public against groups and individuals who use these unfortunate events to discredit the efforts of the Department.”

It was back in June 2020 when an alleged learning-related death was verified and first reported. A Grade 9 student died by suicide, and his mother claimed he was in distress over expenses for “network loads” or internet fees for his online classes.

A few days after the school year 2020-2021 commenced on October 5, another student from South Cotabato allegedly took his own life after struggling with modules, Inquirer reported.

In both cases, DepEd’s field officers were dispatched to provide assistance to the grieving families.

Youth groups have called for an “academic freeze” because of the current schooling situation (you can read the full story here).

DepEd responded by saying it was a shortsighted position. “It does not take into consideration the trade-off of prolonged interruption in the learning process of the children and does not take into consideration the adjustments that have been made in the succeeding school year” (read more here).

Naipaabot sa kaalaman ng Kagawaran ng Edukasyon (DepEd) ang mga pagsubok na hatid ng kasalukuyang sitwasyong mayroon tayo, kasama na rito ang malungkot na balitang may mga guro at mag-aaral ang pumanaw sa gitna ng krisis. Ang Kagawaran, ay lubos na nagdadalamhati at nagpapaabot ng pakikiramay sa mga naulila at sa mga minamahal ng ating kasamahan sa DepEd. Kaya naman patuloy na nakikipag-ugnayan ang ating field offices sa mga pamilyang naiwan upang maiparating ang agarang tulong at suporta.

Hinihiling namin sa publiko na igalang ang pribadong buhay ng pamilyang naiwan at gayundin ang pag-iwas sa mga kuro-kuro ukol sa sanhi ng pagkamatay ng kanilang kaanak.

Isang sensitibo at kumplikadong usapin ang suicide. Kaya naman, nais naming ipanawagan na itigil ang pagkonekta nito sa mga modyul o sa distance learning. Nakatanggap na kami ng mga ulat mula sa kinauukulan, maging mga pahayag ng mga pamilya, at mga inisyal na imbestigasyon ng mga kaso at wala sa alinmang insidente ang tumutukoy sa distance learning bilang pangunahing sanhi ng mga ito.

Binabalaan din namin ang publiko sa mga grupo o indibidwal na ginagamit ang mga nasabing insidente upang siraan at isantabi ang mga pagsisikap ng Kagawaran.

Patuloy na nakikipag-ugnayan ang Kagawaran sa mga guro, kawani, at mga mag-aaral upang sila ay mabigyan at mahatiran ng mga nararapat na serbisyong pang-mental na kalusugan at psychosocial. Gayundin, hinihikayat namin ang bawat isa na mas pagtibayin ang ugnayan at manatiling konektado sa kanilang mga mahal sa buhay sa panahong puno ng pagsubok.Sama-sama, malalagpasan natin ito.
