The Department of Education has released a statement with an appeal to the public to stop connecting recent reports of teacher and student suicides to distance learning.

“Suicide is a sensitive and complex issue. We would like to appeal to everyone to stop directly connecting such to modules and distance learning.”

The statement added, “We caution the public against groups and individuals who use these unfortunate events to discredit the efforts of the Department.”

It was back in June 2020 when an alleged learning-related death was verified and first reported. A Grade 9 student died by suicide, and his mother claimed he was in distress over expenses for “network loads” or internet fees for his online classes.

A few days after the school year 2020-2021 commenced on October 5, another student from South Cotabato allegedly took his own life after struggling with modules, Inquirer reported.

In both cases, DepEd’s field officers were dispatched to provide assistance to the grieving families.

Youth groups have called for an “academic freeze” because of the current schooling situation (you can read the full story here).

DepEd responded by saying it was a shortsighted position. “It does not take into consideration the trade-off of prolonged interruption in the learning process of the children and does not take into consideration the adjustments that have been made in the succeeding school year” (read more here).

Here is DepEd’s full statement in Filipino on the deaths of teachers and students:
