Before the unexpected success of Maria Clara at Ibarra, David Licauco was *so close* to quitting showbiz. In fact, he was already set to focus on his businesses instead of his acting career. “We used to have a hard time landing roles,” said David’s talent manager Arnold Vegafria. “I had to beg networks to give him a role, or we had to produce a movie for him so he could get noticed. But I still believed in him, and if I believe in an artist, I’m very passionate.”
The GMA teleserye was supposed to be David’s ~*one last try*~, but it gave him more than he expected. “He felt that nothing was happening with his career, that it’s stagnant. He has been raring to do lead roles in a soap opera, but he couldn’t land any. Maria Clara at Ibarra was supposed to be his last hurrah,” Arnold added.
“GMA 7 managed to convince us. And we’re like, ‘Okay, why not give it a shot? Let’s see, we might get lucky this time. I told David, ‘Even if it’s just a supporting role, try to get noticed. Show them what you can do. Study your role well. Magpa-cute ka!’”instagram/davidlicauco
According to him, they both didn’t expect that he would instantly click with his co-star Barbie Forteza. “David delivered a good portrayal. He also had chemistry with Barbie. There was luck involved, too. But of course, David’s dedication and hard work were also big factors.”
When he asked the actor if he’s still planning to quit showbiz, the actor confidently answered: “Dire-diretso na tayo.”
We’re proud of you and everything you’ve achieved, David!
