Students and even a handful of faculty members from various colleges and universities are petitioning for their respective schools to end the second semester of S.Y. 2019-2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Given the extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), the transition of classes to online platforms, and the volatile state of COVID-19 cases in the country, among other factors brought about by the pandemic, students believe continuing the current semester is not the most ideal situation.

Various students have voiced out their struggles with the current set-up. Some have explained that not all students have access to such online platforms to fulfill their academic requirements. One student, @abey.yshh, previously shared to Candy in an article, “Not everyone of us has good internet connection or mobile data. Some cannot afford it.”

Others have expressed their concern over the increasing cases of anxiety among students and faculty who need to worry their productivity levels instead of focusing on taking precautionary measures and helping out against the pandemic. Another student, @cruz_ram, shares in the same article, “How can I concentrate after what’s happening in our country right now?”

Many have shared their support for an online petition with the hashtag #EndTheSem to convince their schools to hear the plea of the student body. Part of the petition suggests the early conclusion of the current semester and the mass promotion of students to the next year level.

A member of Lyceum of the Philippines University's student council and Candy Rookie Maddie Cruz shares, "It’s really such an unusual scenario ’cause we’ve never experienced anything like this in the last few years. The #EndTheSem petition is probably the best solution because things are difficult as they are, but we also feel kind of torn about it because it kind of feels like we’re giving up education."

Ateneo ends the semester early

On April 8, Ateneo de Manila University issued a statement saying that they are officially ending the second semester of S.Y. 2019-2020 early for undergraduate students in response to the current state of the country. They’ve also put measures in place so that a P20,000 tuition fee refund will be granted to its students, as well as a 60 percent refund on lab fees.

What are your thoughts, students? Are you in favor of the petition?
