If you're an avid fan of K-pop, you would know that the industry is no stranger to debuting foreign idols in different groups. Good examples of this include Lisa (Thai) from BLACKPINK, Ni-ki (Japanese) from ENHYPEN, Momo (Japanese) from TWICE, and Ningning (Chinese) from aespa, among many others. While these idols hail from different countries, they all came to Korea at a young age to hone their singing and dancing skills in entertainment companies in the hopes of debuting one day and making their dreams come true.
With our country's intense Hallyu obsession, it seems like it was only a matter of time before a Pinoy K-pop idol became a reality. Local fans would be *delighted* to know that it's already in the pipeline! Chantal Videla, a Filipino-Argentinian actress under Star Magic and K-pop trainee under MLD Entertainment, will be debuting in the K-pop girl group LAPILLUS this June 2022.
MLD Entertainment, the same agency that handles MOMOLAND, revealed that the 19-year-old trainee will be one of the members of the upcoming girl group LAPILLUS.
Lee Hyung Jin, the agency’s CEO, told members of the Korean press that members of their next girl group are training as hard as they can before they debut. "The next girl group, LAPILLUS, is preparing more meticulously to debut around June," he noted.
He also mentioned that the group will consist of members who can speak Spanish, English, Tagalog, Chinese, and Japanese.
Aside from Chantal, the only other member of the group who has been officially announced is Nonaka Shana, who is best known for being a contestant on the Mnet survival show Girls Planet 999. According to the CEO, the rest of the members will be revealed one by one in the third week of May.
Before becoming a K-pop trainee, Chantal—or Chanty—already had a career as an actress in the Philippines. She was first launched as part of Star Magic Circle batch 2018 alongside Donny Pangilinan and Charlie Dizon (who was also a former K-pop trainee!) From 2018 to 2020, she appeared in local teleseryes like Spirits: Reawaken and Hiwaga ng Kambat. She's also one of the cast members of the 2019 comedy film Familia Blondina. Before leaving for Korea in 2021, her last TV project in the Philippines was the 2019 teleserye Starla.
These days, you'll be able to spot Chanty on MLD's Instagram as she usually posts her life updates as a trainee under the hashtags #CHANTY and #CHANTALVIDELA.
We'll definitely be supporting you on your debut, Chanty!
