It's common knowledge that the K-pop industry houses a lot of foreign and mixed-heritage artists. But did you know that a decent number of these talents are also part Filipinos? For example, Cignature lead singer Belle, hip hop producer DOK2, and Z-Boys leader Josh actually have Filipino blood in them!
And in case you haven’t heard, up-and-coming K-Pop idol Chantal Videla is also a half-Pinay who’s ready to make a splash in the international music scene. Also known by her stage name Chanty, this talented teen star is all set to debut as a member of new K-pop group Lapillus.
Since her official debut photo dropped last week, we’ve been keeping our eyes peeled for her first-ever performance as a K-pop idol. But in the meantime, we’ll be familiarizing ourselves with her off-stage personality and interesting backstory. If you’re just as curious as we are, here are five fast facts that we know so far about Chanty:
1. Chanty’s a 2002 liner.
Currently 19 years old (21 in Korean age), Chanty was born in the Philippines on December 15, 2002. However, her Filipina mother and Argentinian father decided to move to Mendoza, Argentina when she was only a baby. Consequently, Chanty was raised in Argentina alongside her three younger sisters prior to their family’s return to the Philippines in 2010. Chanty reportedly still visits her hometown in Argentina frequently, with her last visit taking place in 2021.
2. Chanty knows how to speak five languages.
Typically, most K-pop artists are trained to be fluent bilingual speakers so that they can appeal to a wider global audience. But given her mixed-heritage background, Chanty’s at an advantage when it comes to learning new languages. Case in point: She knows how to speak not one, not two, not even three, but five languages! According to her profile, Chanty can speak Filipino, English, Spanish, Korean, and basic Japanese. Just like most of us, she began learning the Korean language by watching Gobin, Descendants of the Sun, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, and other famous K-dramas. In fact, she only started studying the language formally when she became an official K-pop trainee last year.
3. Chanty first joined showbiz as a model and actress.
Chanty was first discovered by a talent agency when she moved back to the Philippines in 2010. She then became a child model for SM Supermalls and attended go-sees for Star Magic. After two years of modeling, she was finally chosen to be among the 13 members of Star Magic Circle Batch 2018. Only 15 years old at the time, Chanty was joined by other rising artists such as Donny Pangilinan, Leila Alcasid, and Charlie Dizon. From there, Chantal made her acting debut in the supernatural series Spirits Reawaken as Gabbie, a teen with mysterious superpowers. A year later, Chantal went on to play supporting roles in ABS-CBN’s Familia Blondina, Hiwaga ng Kambat, and Starla.
4. Chanty is expected to debut in June.
Chanty was first revealed to be a K-pop idol trainee in 2021 through a social media post from MLD Entertainment, the very same agency that manages K-pop groups MOMOLAND and T1419. They later on announced that Chanty will be joining their newest girl group Lapillus with members Bessie, Yue, Seowon, Haeun, and Shana. While they haven’t announced Chanty’s position in the group so far, many are expecting Chanty to be a lead singer given her strong vocal abilities. ICYDK, she has already impressed various fans with her YouTube covers of famous pop songs, including “Part of Your World” and “Santa Tell Me.” Aside from this, Chanty has also appeared in two K-pop music videos, namely JT&Marcus’ “Dear You” and “FIRST.” Did we also mention that she knows how to play the piano and the ukulele? One thing’s for sure: The music industry should definitely watch out for this rising songstress!
5. Chanty is a K-pop fan.
While Chanty enjoys listening to Western artists like Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift, she’s been into K-pop years before she herself joined the industry. In a previous interview with Star Magic, Chanty admitted that she loves BTS and even owns various BT21 merchandise. When it comes to female artists, she’s a big fan of Red Velvet, TWICE, and IU.
