Acne is nothing new for many of us. It's been a recurring thing since our teenage years, and it's something that can persist even until we enter adulthood. And while it's not something we should be ashamed of, acne has been a constant struggle that heavily influenced our self-esteem, especially in the age of social media where we easily fall prey to comparing our looks to filtered photos and glass-skinned selfies.
While we enjoy the creativity we get to unleash through cute filters on social media and appreciate having skincare products that help us take care of our skin, we're also all for normalizing showing off our acne in bare-faced selfies. Even local and international celebrities alike have started being more vocal about their struggles with pimple breakouts despite working in an industry that puts importance in top-tier visuals.
Here, we list down celebrities who opened up about struggling with acne:
Kendall Jenner
The internet was abuzz with comments after model Kendall Jenner showed up on the red carpet of the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, unabashed by the visible acne on her face. She even responded to a tweet complimenting her showing up on the red carpet despite struggling with skin problems, saying, "Never let that sh*t stop you!" People were very supportive of Kendall and applauded her for staying real about a struggle everyone else experienced every day.
Kyline Alcantara
In 2019, Kapuso actress Kyline Alcantara shared her acne struggles on social media by posting a no-makeup photo of her, pimple breakout and all. "It started with one zit, and then it became two until I can't count them anymore," Kyline recounted in her post. "Imagine people are always expecting you to be at your best, to look perfect, to look like the polished girl that they always see in TV and magazines."Â
She also added a very important lesson about self-love, and how it's okay to want to enhance aspects of yourselves if it makes you happy, as long as you don't lose who you are while you're at it. "It's okay to upgrade and to improve yourself but it's very important na hindi dapat mawala yung sarili mo in the process of it."
Lili Reinhart
Riverdale star Lili Reinhart has always been about staying real, and that includes her experience with cystic acne. As per People.com, Lili opened up on Instagram and shared that she's had cystic acne since she was 12 years old, and it has always been a source of self-esteem issues. She also added a hopeful message, saying, "I’m hoping that someday I can feel beautiful even if I’m having a breakout. And that I won’t feel obsessive or paranoid."
Frankie Pangilinan
Gen Z personality Frankie Pangilinan is also calling for "normalizing what's real" after posting a bare-faced selfie and getting real about breakouts in a 2018 tweet. Frankie says, "It’s super normal to get texture and scars and it’s nothing to be ashamed of!!"
Bella Thorne
Bella Thorne isn't shy when it comes to posting selfies of her acne journey, but that was not always the case for her. In a 2016 interview with Popsugar, Bella shared how she would not leave her bedroom because of her breakouts and would turn to pounds of makeup to help cover it up. "People think that you're, like, dirty and disgusting, that you must not take care of yourself and you're uncleanly because you have acne, but it's really just something that everybody gets," she says.
