Catching Up with Augustus from The Fault in Our Stars, Mia from If I Stay, and Rachel from Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
With Ansel Elgort posting throwback pics of him with Allegiant and The Fault in Our Stars co-star Shailene Woodley, and also memes inspired by TFIOS, we got to thinking: what could Augustus Waters be up to at this very moment?
Is he looking down on Hazel Grace Lancaster with an unlit cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth? Is he leaving a mark in the afterlife, taking it upon himself to be the ambassador of mischief and merrymaking (because fun demands to be felt)? Has he made peace with his ex-girlfriend Caroline, whose brain tumor made her mean-spirited during her final days?
We'd like to think it's all of the above. Wherever he is now, we're pretty sure he's making it a better place with his unbridled enthusiasm for (after)life. He's probably working on a very long bucket list of places to go to with Hazel when they finally reunite. (Because he still can't get over that she used her dying wish to go to Disneyland!) In the meantime, he's got access to as many video games as his heart desires, and the company of some very cool people from the sicktopia world.
Like Rachel Kushner from Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. The first time Gus sees her, he's taken aback by how much she looks like Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta, which reminds him of his first hangout sesh with Hazel. (But that's nothing compared to seeing Hazel's tattooed doppelganger who's from an entirely different world. *wink wink*)
He and Rachel set up a regular movie night, and she tells him all about her friends Greg and Earl and the short films they made. She shows him the short film that Greg made especially for her, which, she's happy to find out, has helped Greg get into his dream university. Without her oxygen tank in the way, Rachel is finally free to spend as much time as she wants reading books and carving them out to depict scenes from her new life. She's also begun writing her own novel.
Rachel and Gus also meet Mia Hall from If I Stay. Although she only stays for a while, she promises to try to deliver messages to their loved ones for them. When she wakes up from a coma, though, Mia doesn't quite remember her promise. But her subconscious does and it comes out in her cello solos, which eventually make their way to Hazel, Greg, Earl, and co., reminding them that the world may seem unfair or devastating at times, but overall, as Gus says, it is a good life.
