One of the most sought-after photographers in the local creative scene is BJ Pascual. He's photographed big names in the fashion and entertainment industry, including homegrown top stars Liza Soberano, Nadine Lustre, supermodel Coco Rocha, and Filipino Victoria's Secret model Kelsey Merritt.

But did you know that his full-time career now started out as something he only did for fun? “I started taking photographs as a hobby. Little did I know that this hobby will turn into a passion that would eventually become my career," BJ shares in an interview with Preview.

Prior to becoming a full-time lensman, BJ took up International Studies at De La Salle University. But the course wasn't his first choice in college--it was actually Computer Science. BJ is a self-confessed coding geek and knows the basics of coding like HTML, PHP, and JavaScript.

If he didn't pursue photography as a full-time career, BJ says that he would probably have been a web designer. "Especially noon grade school, high school ako. Mahilig ako sa mga programming, ganiyan. So gumagawa ako ng mga websites," BJ explains in an interview on Mela Habijan's video series 3SOME.

Despite being able to understand the basic buidling blocks of websites (practically a whole other language), BJ has always had an eye for the more visual side of it. "Na-realize ko, yung nae-enjoy ko pala na part ng web design was not actually yung mga coding part, but yung design part."

It all worked out in the end, though, as BJ has established his mark as one of the top photographers in the country, having worked with top stars and equally respected creatives locally and internationally. Still, he's not limiting himself to just the field he dedicated his craft to. BJ is also a believer of "diversifying" our pursuits. "Wala naman masama kung--especially nga ngayong [may] pandemic e--kung mag-diversify man tayo ng skillsets kasi ang dami na ngang nawalan ng trabaho," he says in the same interview.

Aside from being a photographer, BJ is also a published author. In 2015, he released a book called Push: Muses, Mischief & how to Make it in Manila. He also started his own YouTube channel to share a more in-depth look at his life as a creative.
