The LGBTQ community has come a long way since the first brick was thrown at Stonewall. That's not to say, however, that the fight is over. There's still a need for much more representation in the media. Bisexuality, for instance, has always been regarded as a phase. (News flash: It's not). And, there are a handful of out and proud bisexual celebrities who have opened up their lives to shine a light on the label. Here are six celebrities who put the 'b' in LGBTQ.
In 2019, Scottish-Filipino actor and dancer Alex Diaz came out as a bisexual online after he was outed. A private conversation of Diaz and another man surfaced, and instead of letting the whole thing die down, he took control of the narrative. "Never again will I be shackled by the fear of what might be said about who I am for fear of losing my career and instead, I will seek help, heal and champion change, acceptance and representation for the bisexual community and/or anyone who is met with prejudice in our society," he wrote on Instagram.
TV host and model Mari Jasmine came out after tabloids questioned her relationship with director Samantha Lee. In response, she boldly said that she has had “the privilege of being in love with both men and women.”
Months later, she further expounded on labels by saying that: “Labels are what humans use to understand/ navigate their experiences and the world around them. Just because they exist, it doesn’t mean that you have to fit into a category or identify with a particular label. You also don’t need to understand someone’s identity in order to respect it.”
Mark Bautista said it straight when he announced that he "[loves] both sexes" back in 2018. And, he released a tell-all memoir to mark the occasion. In an interview, he says "I just feel na bagong milestone talaga siya for me. Accept me for who I am. I don't care anymore."
In a YES! cover story, Nora Aunor casually admitted that she may be bisexual. When asked if she was a lesbian, Aunor was unsure. Instead, she took a liking to the bisexual label, saying, "Baka nga gano'n ako. Kung gano'n ako, masaya pa rin, di ba? At least, puwede ka kahit ano, 'yong gano'n."
In 2019, vlogger Mikey Bustos dropped two massive pieces of news when he came out as bisexual while announcing that he was in a relationship with his talent manager RJ Garcia. He said: "Me, I'm bisexual and identify as male. I think I figured I was bisexual sometime in college."
In a YouTube video, model and artist Issa Pressman came out as bisexual. She says, "Because my family is quite small and we're only four in the family. I think it was just the way that I had to introduce myself to them, of like 'liking girls, liking guys.' That's me. That's who I am. For them, it was just like, 'If you're happy with what you're doing, if you think that you're doing is something that would make you happy, could make you happy, then go ahead.'"
