"A week ago, Veronica and I weren't friends. Next week, we'll nod to each other as we pass in the hall, but that's it. In two weeks, she won't even remember my name. In three, she'll have latched on to some other girl to destroy."
These were Betty Cooper's matter-of-fact words on episode two of Riverdale, after Veronica Lodge profusely apologized, with cupcakes, flowers, and hers-and-hers spa treatments, for those seven minutes with Betty's best friend and first love, Archie Andrews. Fast forward to a few weeks later—an eternity in TV land—and B and V have not only stayed friends, but the absolute best-est. They have 1) started their own investigation into Jason Blossom's death, 2) got real with Archie over Ms. Grundy's real identity, 3) taken down a slut shamer (in a rather disturbing way but that's another story in itself), and 4) helped Betty’s pregnant sister, Polly, find shelter after she broke out of the home for troubled youths where she was banished to.
B and V's friendship started out rocky and one-sided, but we think it's safe to say that with everything they've gone through, their relationship is for keeps. Betty of episode two never would've thought that Veronica (and V's mom) would, just a few weeks later, willingly host a baby shower for Polly despite all the possible family drama.
But isn't that the way some friendships go? Sometimes you lose your oldest friends, your best friends for-e-ver. Sometimes you end up becoming soul mates with the people you never imagined would be there for you during your toughest times, whether that includes a murder mystery or just your average, crime-free problems. It's interesting how things play out. So the next time you meet someone new that you don't immediately take to, keep an open mind. You might have just found a friend for keeps.Â
