iOS Users, Apple Says You Need to Update ASAP Due to Security Breaches
In a security update released on January 26, 2021, Apple encouraged iPhone and iPad users to promptly update their operating system to the latest version, iOS 14.4, due to security issues detected, which "may have been actively exploited" by hackers.
In the security update, Apple disclosed that it received reports regarding security breaches in Kernel, one of its frameworks, and WebKit, a browser engine developed by the company utilized in the Safari browser.
"A malicious application may be able to elevate privileges," shares Apple regarding Kernel. On WebKit's issue, on the other hand, Apple says, "A remote attacker may be able to cause arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited."
According to Apple, the new OS update, which is now available for iPhone 6s and later, iPad Air 2 and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and iPod touch (7th generation), should already have new features and fixes in place to address these vulnerabilities.
Aside from the fortified security update, iOS 14.4 includes: redesigned widgets, App Library updates, a new compact design for calls, Siri, and Picture in Picture feature, Messages updates, and App Clips, among others.
To update your device, head to Settings > General > Software Update. To avoid losing important documents and data on your device, it is recommended that you back up your data first before updating.
