Director Antoinette Jadaone speaks up about the future of her podcast Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast, and talked about how it's more important to pay attention to the "voices that need to be heard" at the moment. This comes days after the Boys' Love series Gaya sa Pelikula's own future was called into question in light of its lead actor's experience with sexual harassment.
GSP actor Paolo Pangilinan speaks up
On June 20, Gaya sa Pelikula actor Paolo Pangilinan vaguely opened up on Twitter about an experience with sexual harassment. "Basta yung sakin lang harassers shouldn’t assert [or] be put in positions of power esp when they’ve been reported already thank u no delete," Pangilinan's tweet says.
Gaya Sa Pelikula executive producer Quark Henares also posted several tweets regarding the situation, expressing support for Paolo, GSP fans, and those who we were affected by the news. "Because of recent events, the message of that show has become endangered. It broke our hearts to see Stan accounts change their names, to see people struggling with what the show may have meant for them. To question the message, and how it made them feel," reads one of his tweets.
Henares also clarified that Pangilinan still wants to continue working on GSP, but that they are also considering working on something else entirely given the situation. Filming for Season 2 was supposed to start next week, according to journalist MJ Felipe.
Antoinette Jadaone's statement
On June 23, the Fan Girl director made a statement regarding the state of her podcast Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast in response to Pangilinan's recent announcement.
In a post made in the Facebook Group Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast After-Podcast Tsikahan, Jadaone apologized for only speaking up days after the issue blew up. The rest of her statement on Facebook says, "I wanted to personally talk to those involved who are close to me, hear both sides, in hopes of having a clearer understanding first before speaking. Sexual harassment is very serious and should not be taken lightly. Tulad n'yo, in shock din ako at nalulungkot sa mga nangyayari. Hindi ko rin alam ang kabuuan ng kwento, but I know that when a victim speaks up, we must listen, and empathize, kahit na o lalo na kung malapit sa atin ang involved."
Many fans of Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast expressed their worries about the future of the show. Jadaone asked fans to simply wait. Despite building a community and finding "respite" through the podcast, Jadaone wishes to make time for reflection and expressed the importance of listening to victims who mustered enough courage to speak up about their stories. "Pero sa palagay ko, mas mahalaga sa punto na ito na mag-reflect muna, and clear some space to listen to the voices that need to be heard. I hope you understand. Maraming salamat sa pakikinig, at hanggang sa muli!"
