  1. The Cinemalaya Film Festival (August 5 to 13)

It's that time of the year again when established and up-and-coming creatives get to tell stories that we rarely see in mainstream cinema. This year’s interesting characters include a boy reconnecting with his father through boxing (Kiko Boksingero), a mother who in desperate times turns to folklore stories (Ang Pamilyang Hindi Lumuluha), and a woman who goes missing in a small town (Nabubulok starring Jameson Blake and JC Santos). Watch all the trailers and check out the screening schedule here

  1. Baby Driver (now showing)

The Ansel Elgort movie that everyone's talking about has finally made it to our shores! Here, he plays a getaway driver with exceptional skills and even better taste in music. It's one heck of a ride, and you can read more about it here and here.

  1. 100 Tula Para Kay Stella (August 16)

Like you need another reason to fall for JC Santos—here he plays a guy with a stutter who turns to poetry for comfort and structure, and finds a muse (Bella Padilla) who makes the words flow like never before.

  1. Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B (August 16)

When two people start dating/hanging out/whatever it's called these days, they're bound to discover each other's secrets. Sometimes these secrets are embarrassing but overall harmless, other times they're pretty insane—like finding out the girl is actually a manananggal, who can split her body in half so that the top half can fly away to hunt for food, a.k.a. babies still in the womb. As far as unconventional love stories go, this one's right up there!

  1. The Emoji Movie (August 23)

Emojis have one job, and when they don't express the proper emotion when called upon, it can spell trouble for the whole city of Textopolis, home to all emojis. The hilarious movie features the voices of T.J. Miller (a.k.a. Deadpool's BFF), James Corden (the genius behind carpool karaoke), and Ilana Glazer (one half of Broad City's winning pair).

  1. The House (August 23)

The struggle to pay for college is very real, which is why two parents actually carry out their insane plan to turn their basement into an illegal casino in the hopes of earning enough cash for their daughter's tuition fee. You just know it's going to get out of hand, but with Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell leading the way, you also know it’s going to be a lot of fun.

  1. Annabelle: Creation (August 23)

Three years after Annabelle comes a new chapter in this creepy saga. This time, the doll finds new "playmates" in the form of the nun and six orphans that her maker welcomes to their home.

  1. The Dark Tower (August 30)

"There are other worlds than these," Stephen King famously wrote in his best-selling novels, and now these worlds are coming to the big screen, with Idris Elba as The Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black.

  1. Love You to the Stars and Back (August 30)

Written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone (Till I Met You, On the Wings of Love, That Thing Called Tadhana), this movie brings JoshLia back to the big screen. Joshua Garcia plays Caloy, a guy who falls for Mika, played by Julia Barretto, a girl who believes in extraterrestrial beings.
