It's that time of the year again when established and up-and-coming creatives get to tell stories that we rarely see in mainstream cinema. This year’s interesting characters include a boy reconnecting with his father through boxing (Kiko Boksingero), a mother who in desperate times turns to folklore stories (Ang Pamilyang Hindi Lumuluha), and a woman who goes missing in a small town (Nabubulok starring Jameson Blake and JC Santos). When two people start dating/hanging out/whatever it's called these days, they're bound to discover each other's secrets. Sometimes these secrets are embarrassing but overall harmless, other times they're pretty insane—like finding out the girl is actually a manananggal, who can split her body in half so that the top half can fly away to hunt for food, a.k.a. babies still in the womb. As far as unconventional love stories go, this one's right up there!
