7 Soul-Crushing Breakups on TV
ICYMI, Aria and Ezra broke up for good (it seems) on Pretty Little Liars last week. Although she didn't regret one second of their complicated relationship, Aria realized that she did miss out on a lot in high school because of it. They both agree that she should be single when she goes off to college, and Ezra proposes that they end things now instead of counting down the days. It's the end of an era!
While we're glad that they ended things on a good note, their breakup reminded us of all the other TV couples who've broken our hearts by calling it quits.
Nick and Jess on New Girl. "What if love is the only thing we have in common?" Try as they might to make things work, Nick and Jess realize that they want different things and decide to break it off. But who knows—they might have a change of heart down the line!
Elena and Stefan on The Vampire Diaries. Breaking up a perfectly good relationship because an ex is out for blood is ridiculous, but the devastation in Stefan’s eyes is all too real.
Dan and Serena on Gossip Girl. Of all the times they broke up, there's nothing quite as memorable as their last dance at Lily and Bart's wedding. Thrown together by an overenthusiastic coordinator, they slow dance the night away until they're the only ones left. "You're going to remember this night forever," the wedding coordinator said, and it's true—every time we hear "The Ice Is Getting Thinner," we think of this beautifully shot scene.
Scott and Allison on Teen Wolf. When Allison breaks up with Scott, he's pretty chill about it because he says he can wait and he knows they’re going to be together. "There's no such thing as fate," she says. Scott drops the mic with the perfect comeback: "There's no such thing as werewolves."
Robin and Barney on How I Met Your Mother. Their wedding weekend was stretched out over the entire final season, only for them to get divorced three years later. That may be how things end for some couples—the creators said it was a finale about "life's twists and turns"—but this is Robin and Barney, and they deserved a happily ever after for all that they'd been through.
Chuck and Blair on Gossip Girl. In case anyone was wondering, trading your girlfriend for a hotel is never a good idea. "You said you would stand by me through anything," Chuck says. Blair replies, "I never thought the worst thing you'd ever do would be to me."
Kurt and Blaine on Glee. This stripped-down version of "Teenage Dream" was recorded live, with no playbacks unlike most Glee song numbers, which made the beginning of the end for Kurt and Blaine that much more emotional. We dare you to watch the whole thing and not get carried away!
