6 Things to Do Before Your Shows Come Back
If musicians have their pre-show rituals, then couch potatoes have these pre-season to-dos.

Couch potatoes around the world love the fall season in the US because it signals the return of most TV shows and the arrival of a fresh batch of rookies. New Girl leads the pack, premiering locally with a match airing on ETC tonight at 7:30. Everything else comes back starting next week, so we have at least a few days to prepare for our favorite season.

  1. Catch up. Whether it’s the final leg of The Voice that you haven't seen yet or the series finale of The Carrie Diaries you can't bring yourself to watch, it’s time to finish them once and for all. By now, you've probably been spoiled already, so do yourself a favor and get some closure and peace of mind.

  2. Decide. This is also the time to evaluate your life choices and narrow down your must-watch list. Outgrown a certain show? Find yourself zoning out? Only watching it because the Internet says it's cool? Anything that doesn't bring you joy and/or fulfillment has got to go.

  3. Research. A new batch of shows is one of the main reasons why you should do #1 and #2. Think of it as cleaning out your closet to make room for new clothes. We've done the work for you—shop for your new favorites here!

  4. Watch movies. Because hardcore couch potatoes can be classified into the TV crowd and the movie folks. I feel for people who tend to miss blockbusters when they hit cinemas because for some reason, marathon-ing days worth of episodes is more manageable than watching a two-hour movie. Or is it just me? Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Gravity, and Her are a few parties I regret being late to.

  5. Read. The same goes for books. I haven't joined that Top 10 Books bandwagon on Facebook no matter how many friends have tagged me, not because it's too mainstream, but because my list is too immature and outdated. Sure, they say don't think about it, but people judge—I judge myself the most! I've made only the tiniest dent on all the books I'd like to read and any list I make now will barely scratch the surface. This is all just a roundabout way of saying that hardcore TV fans should make time to get lost in a different kind of medium, especially when there are no shows to distract us.

  6. Enjoy real life. Because it's one of the first to go when the TV season starts, right? Go out with your friends, catch up with your childhood buddies, ask a guy out, spend time with your family, and clock in some me time outdoors. Soak it up and may all this realness remind you of life outside your bedroom when the TV season kicks into high gear—even when life in the small screen is pretty darn awesome.
