For some, 2020 is a year that we’d rather collectively forget. From getting threatened with a health crisis to several industries shutting down, the world has gone through a lot this year that an escape, even a temporary one, would be a welcome change.

Because we have to stay at home, the only adventures we could go on are the ones we can read from books. If you need a break from reality, these young adult fantasy titles can whisk you away to new worlds:

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Graceling is the first book in the Graceling Realm series. In the series, people who are born with two different eye colors have what is called a Grace, which is a special ability unique to the person (it could be range from something very simple to something very powerful). The book follows the story of Katsa, who is initially assumed as someone Graced with the ability to kill. If you’re a fan of The Hunger Games, you might also like the main character in this book.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

City of Bones is the first book in the The Mortal Instruments series. It follows the journey of Clary Fray as she discovers the world of the Shadow World and her true identity. The book has since been turned into a movie (City of Bones starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower) and a series (Shadowhunters starring Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Matthew Daddario, and Harry Shum, Jr.). Fans of mythic creatures like vampires, werewolves, and faeries will find the books characters’ ~enchanting~.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Greek mythology enthusiasts need the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series on their reading list, starting with the very first installment, The Lightning Thief. The series follows the story of 12-year-old Percy Jackson as he finds out that he’s demigod--the child of a human and a god. I Am Number Four is the first installment in the The Lorien Legacies series written by a group of authors under the pseudonym Pittacus Lore. The series focuses on the Loric, an alien race that finds their way to earth after being wiped out by another extraterrestrial race called the Mogadorians. The first book introduces the story of Number Four, one of the ten Loric Garde who possess Legacies (or special powers, in simple terms) tasked with defending the remaining members of their race and planet.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Scarlett has been dreaming of seeing Caraval, an annual performance where the audience get to actively take part in. Scarlett finally gets a chance to see the show with the help of her sister Tella but as soon as they get to Caraval, her sister gets kidnapped. Scarlett finds out that the main theme of this year’s performance is to find Tella and whoever does so wins the game. Action, magic, love… these things become enmeshed in the book series Caraval.
