Perhaps, one of the silver linings of having to stay at home was discovering Asian content. Even more so, Thai content!
Don’t get us wrong, we will always love J-Pop, K-pop, anime, K-drama, unnies and oppas - there is no questioning that. However, we also feel that if you haven’t given the Thai dramas a shot, you’re actually missing out on a lot. From the cute-kilig moments given to us by Tine and Sarawat to the thrilling adventures of our girl Nanno, there’s still so much we have yet to see.
Did we mention that there is no scarcity in eye candy in the Thai cinematic universe, too? If you don’t believe us, here are five underrated thai actors you should follow right about now!
Krissanapoom Pibulsonggram, more famously known as JJ or his online alias, Jaylerr is the first in our list. JJ has starred in the young adult fantasy series Great Men Academy, Diary of Tootsies, and Suddenly 20 - the Thai adaption of Miss Granny. He’s not only charming and funny, he can sing and dance too. He’s part of 9x9, one of the most sought-after male groups in Thailand.
On the side note, he’s been in a relationship with fellow Nadao Talent, Thanaerng Kanyawee and best believe their occasional showing off on IG will make you want to say “SANA ALL!”
If you’re one of those people who couldn’t get enough of the Bad Genius movie and kept tabs when a series adaptation was released, you’ve probably seen him already. The 22-year old half-British actor is known for playing the bad guy or characters with generally reserved and cold personalities. However, if you watch some of his videos with his bro JJ, he seems to be quite the opposite irl. You’d also be surprised at how well he can carry English tunes - we highly recommend listening to his cover of "Memories" by Maroon 5 or "Dancing on My Own" by Callum Scott.
If it’s unapologetic style and aesthetics we’re talking about - Third Lapat is on top of our list. This CommArts graduate from Chulalongkorn University started his career in 2013, appearing in the Thai remake of Romeo and Juliet. In the coming years, he rose to fame with single debuts and collaborations and eventually venturing into acting. One of his most recent appearances on TV is in the 2019 series Great Men Academy, alongside JJ and Ice Paris where he played the role of Nuclear, sporting bright pink hair throughout the series.
Two of the things we love about Thai movies and film? Diversity and representation. We dare say Drake Laedeke is the best embodiment of this. The 20-year-old actor was born in Chiang Mai to a Thai-born mother and an American-born father with Thai, American, Chinese, Scottish and German descent. He started acting when he was 14. Currently, he is studying at University of Thai Chamber of Commerce - School of Tourism and Service Event Management.
If it's the range you want to talk about, no one does it better than our boy James. One look at his Instagram feed and you already know he’s not afraid of expressing himself or trying out new things. He’s part of the original cast of the 2017 movie Bad Genius. After that, he became part of the male group 9x9. In 2019, he played the role of “Love”, a little girl stuck in a young man’s body in Great Men Academy. Just this year, he appeared as “Nanai”, the love interest of Nanno in the first episode of Girl From Nowhere. Tbh, we just can’t help but look forward to what he has in store.
