Watching a movie on your first date with someone? Instead of picking a rom-com by default (although rom-coms are fun too!), you can try other genres that can be just as enjoyable for both of you. There are so many options depending on your personalities, but for sure you'll want to stay away from painful triggers like That Thing Called Tadhana, The Fault in Our Stars, La La Land...you catch our drift?
- Train to Busan (streaming on iFlix)
Nothing more romantic than the zombie apocalypse, right? But seriously, this sleeper hit about a group of train passengers trying to outrun zombies is a great choice even if you've already seen it. And what could be better than watching the end of the world? Discussing it afterwards. A few guide questions: Where would you go if the undead does rise? What would be your weapon of choice? What would you do if you get bitten?
- Why Him? (now showing in cinemas)
This movie about a guy meeting his girlfriend’s mom and disapproving dad seems like a bad choice for a first date, but it is HILARIOUS. Like two hours of nonstop, tears-in-your-eyes laughing. You'll leave the cinema in high spirits, recalling all of the oh-no-they-didn't bits. Bonus: This will give you an idea of what not to do if your relationship goes to the meet-the-parents level.
- The Breakfast Club (streaming on Netflix)
This John Hughes classic belongs to the hall of fame of high school movies. It came out more than 30 years ago, but you will definitely be able to relate to its story about five students from different cliques coming together for detention and realizing that they are all so much more than the stereotypes assigned to them. Don't be surprised if you find yourselves opening up to each other, just like The Breakfast Club.
- Sunday Beauty Queen (now showing at Cinema 76)
If you missed it at the last MMFF, here's your chance to catch the docu everyone's talking about. It follows the backbreaking, heart-wrenching lives of Filipino workers abroad who find escape in an annual beauty pageant. Pretty heavy stuff, but if both of you are looking for something with more substance, you can't go wrong with this one. Cinema 76 is also home to all sorts of quality movies from vintage titles to Filipino movies pulled out from theaters too soon, so who knows—this could be a couple tradition in the making.
- The LEGO Batman Movie (now showing in cinemas)
Can't decide on one movie? Bahala na si Batman—literally. (Sorry.) But seriously, the latest in the LEGO Cinematic Universe (there's such a thing now, obvi) has got it all: good vs. evil, snarky vigilante humor, and heroes who don't really know what they're doing. Also, if your date's favorite superhero is Batman, they will forever associate you with things that bring them joy, and that's always a good thing!
What movies would you recommend for a first date?
