CyberCrime Prevention Law: More Fun In The Philippines
« on: October 07, 2012, 03:53:11 pm »
How could there be no trend about this in this forum?

Basically, the Cybercrime law is supposedly ratified to fend off hacking, identity theft, manipulation of data, cybersex and other despicable activities in the Internet but in the hands Sen. Vicente Sotto and our president who knows his priorities, this law became a censorship law that condemns anyone who speaks up about the idiocy in our government.

So, what are your views about it?

I agree that we need a cybercrime law because there are real dangers that the internet poses (identity theft, hacking, etc) but this doesn't mean that the law should curtail freedom of speech. the internet can be used to harass and defame and i agree that users who do such things should be penalized but the problem with the cybercrime law that was passed is that the scope of what libel is is very broad, vague in definition and thus can be misconstrued. it can easily be abused. protecting the citizens from online crime and hate speech is very different from censorship. there are many countries that have existing cyber laws dealing with online harassment like the UK but the people are still very much free to say what's on their mind, they can criticize the government without fear.

Our lawmakers should review the bill, give very clear definitions for what constitutes as online libel instead of the paltry one it has now.

I think its not an issue and its just a waste of time. Instead of the government thinking and solving big issues that mostly affect the countries, they waste time and especially money to useless things.

But we do need a cybercrime law. This one that this stupid government made is too much, too protective.

Is there still a TRO against this law? Or are we all going to jail?

Yes, a cybercrime law would help a lot but the libel provisions on our country's version make SOPA look/sound reasonable.

Last time I watched the news, the TRO is implemented until next year. Then they'll have some oral debate.

Yes. The country needs a cybercrime law to fend of despicable activities in the internet. But our country's version includes a libel provision. So basically, if you speak up against the government, you can be imprisoned. Criticizing is not the same as "spreading lies". It's just pointing out the good and the bad in person, thing or issue and criticizing it's not a crime.  The libel provision also steps on our freedom to gain information, because it limits journalists' right to inform us of what happens in our government.
