HAZING
« on: August 21, 2012, 07:03:46 pm »
Recently, some news about hazing victims came out.
What is your opinion about hazing?
Please share your ideas.

a harmless prank or two here and there, or running a few errands would not be a big deal as an initiation of being "welcome to the group" is fine.

But when you start beating the crap out of someone to show your loyalty, or any hazing exercise that causes considerable physical and/or psychological harm, then the only real person to blame here is the person who got hazed. People think that being in certain fraternities (if it is frat-based hazing) is cool and/or offers you protection for whatever it is you think you need protection from.

I've seen women have burn scars and bruises and knew that they applied to be a member of one of the largest fraternities in the Philippines (take your guess, it has three symbols) and asked her "why do you put up with this garbage?" Any organization that condones this kind of hazing is garbage, no matter how prestigious they presume it to be.

i don't get it.

you get smacked to within an inch of your life, only to call the people who beat you "brothers?" where's the logic? is the prestige and the supposed advantage you gain in joining frats worth your life?

I don't get it, either. If it were some sort of initiation, why is it that harsh? I mean, can't initiation be something like an exam? Or an application form? Or audition, if what their testing are your skills. I can't find the connection of it to becoming part of a fraternity.

If they want to test a person's commitment to be in a group by physical means, they can always do some form of a pass/fail course like what they do at BUD/S and/or "Hell Week".

At least you are the one pushing your body to the limit. All they have to do is supervise you and make sure you dont die in the process. You can quit anytime if you believe you cant push yourself further anymore.

I personally think fraternities and sororities are just a sad excuse to have friends. I think it's pretty funny when they make them do errands or kinda boss them around but beating them is just pointless.

I won't deny it: I spend way too much time online. Mostly I'm just stalking people on Facebook and Instagram, other times I'm doing something more useful like reading articles...
