Her Feelings
“Do you like Kris?” Sarah, who was seating beside me said with a teasing smile. I was surprised with Sarah's straightforward question.
“N..no...” I merely stared at her as my heart rate quickened.
“No… not really.. I mean, no..but” My voice trailed off into the thin air as if searching for words.
“But?” My feeling then was inexplicable; the way it felt like a wave had just crashed down and caused me to sway distorted.
“There’s something about him. I don’t know how to explain it. Everything from his swooning smile, to his subtle way of talking, the way he carried himself--- seemed like sad realities, sad silences and he was trying too hard to hide it. He was sad. And I could tell that.” Sarah looked at me intently in the eyes.
“How do you know? I mean, that sadness he was trying too hard to hide?”So when Yzaack showed up in front of me once he entered the classroom, walking towards me with his eyes staring straight ahead past where I sat, I remembered the excitement rising in my stomach while saying,
“Because eyes are the windows to your soul.”
After a while, Mrs. Santos entered the classroom
“Good morning class! You’ll be working with your Romeo and Juliet partners today ,” she said brusquely, taking folder after file folder out of her bag and dropping them onto the table.
He was reaching into his bag for his copy of Romeo and Juliet and a pen when he looked up to find me approaching his seatmate’s vacated desk.
“Hey,” he said quietly as she sat down.
“Hi,” I smiled in reply, even as I set my things down with uneasy hands. I met his eyes for an instant before looking away to slide my bag underneath Niko’s chair.
We looked towards the front of the room as our teacher began to speak.
“I’ve assigned you all your chapters,” she said, gesturing towards the whiteboard, where each pairs’ names were written in black ink along with the scenes.
“I’m going to give you some time to read, or to talk amongst yourselves if you’d like to begin working on your presentation right away. I’m expecting a lot from you guys. Feel free to approach me if you have questions.”Ms. Santos then settled in her desk, and pairs began gradually to speak as she silently took attendance.
“We have the last two chapters,” he said after glancing at the whiteboard
. “Act V, Scene 3… So we’ll read for today and start working later?”
“Okay,” I said with a nod.
I took a glimpse of Yzaack to find him leaning over his copy of Romeo and Juliet a little, his chin in the palm of his hand as he took the words in like a plant absorbs sunlight.
His face was in full view when I glanced at him but he seemed too deep in thought to notice that I was looking.
After a few minutes of reading our assigned chapters, we decided to work on the review and reaction as individuals then just meet up later so we could combine and put together our thoughts regarding the chapter.
I smiled widely as I saw raindrops the size of bullets poured incessantly down when I turned to look outside. I watched the rain wondrously danced on the glass exterior, my fingers gently tracing the path it formed.
“Do you like it when it’s raining?” Hesitantly, I peeled my sight away from the glass window and turned around to face him.
“Uhmhhmm.”He sat up and straightened himself up next to me and stared outside as if waiting for me to continue.
”It brings me comfort because when it rains, it means the sky is sad for me too, and it usually gives me the idea that I'm not alone.
” I said and paused for only a short second then continued on,
“Sometimes, don’t you wish life could be simple?”There was a long silence..
And then he bit his lip before looking up with a shake on his head.
“All the time.” And I knew, right then, that
somewhere inside me,
my heart had stirred.Perhaps, I looked as though I wanted to add something else, but my gaze dallied around the room and stalled as if distracted.
“Let’s just continue this tomorrow, I’m sleepy.” He exited the room after that and I was left wondering.
Did I say something wrong?
But despite it all,
I felt a simple yet overwhelming need to know him ------
better.
