As soon as I was inside my room, I threw my bag on my bed and then I turned my laptop on. I was so excited; I wanted to check if she already accepted me as her friend or not. I opened my Facebook account and to my surprise, she didn't. Oo na, ako na ang nasurprise.

I sighed heavily and then I started browsing another site by creating a new tab; I stumbled upon a quote-site, so I decided to copy paste something para may ipost ako sa status ko. I went back to my facebook by shifting to the previous tab.

"What's on your mind?" Seriously, Facebook needs to lighten up a bit. It's becoming a little boring now since the thing that greets me every time is that really stupid crappy thing. "What's on your mind?"

Because I am also like Facebook - boring, crappy, and stupid with no love life, I decided to tell Facebook what's on my mind.

Shan Torres : says I've been dreaming about your voice.

Right.

I was about to close the window, without the hope of getting my friend request accepted, when all of the sudden may isang notification na nagpop-out.

Talagang pinagfefiestahan nila `yung status ko ah? Haha. I scrolled down to see the 4 remaining notifications. I swear I was ready to die the moment I saw this:

I clicked her name and then a small chat box appeared. I felt my heart throbbing. Whew. Eto na. I started typing.

Me: See the stars?

I know! It's so lame. Pero `yun yung sinabi ko sa kanya the night before she ran away from me. Please, please, please let her reply.

I almost fell from my seat the moment a "typing-icon" appeared on the lower portion of the box.

She's going to reply, she's going to reply!!

Crystal Mijares: They're beautiful tonight.

A smile traveled on my lips; my fingers itching to type a reply.

Me: Thank you for accepting my request. =)

I added a smiley so I wouldn't appear too serious. I was told by a girl classmate once that being-too-serious is equal to minus pogi points.

Another "typing-icon" appeared.

This conversation was going somewhere. Oh, god. I've never been this happy.

Crystal Mijares: No problem. =)

Oh my god, may smiley rin `yung reply niya!

BEEP.

"Wrong timing naman, sino ba `tong nagcall?" In case you`re wondering why my call alert tone is BEEP, it`s because I just want it that way. Haha. "Hello?"

"Pare, are you ready na? We`re going to pick you up in 30 minutes na! The party`s starting soon!"

Oh, I forgot. I have a debut to attend pa pala.

Me: Crystal, right? Need to go now, going somewhere pa. Take care! =)

I hit "enter" and then I ran into the bathroom and took a quick shower.

"Crystal, this will fit you best!"

I stood there in front of Maan as she was fixing my greek-inspired gown. I took a paper and then I wrote in it. "Are you sure you want me to go down? I mean, I can stay here naman..."

"Baliw ka ba? Of course I want you to join the fun! Crystal, they will never know who you are... unless you try to remove your mask!" She punched me playfully, and then she handed me a silver mask with lots of ka-artehan. "Here, this is yours. Wear it okay?" I nodded. I took the pen again and I wrote another thing on the paper.

"What if someone walks up to me and talks to me?"

Maan smiled at me and then she winked. "Just act mysterious tonight, no one will suspect."

Okay. I will.

But I'm not so sure about this, though.

"Shan, you should wear your mask okay?" Tinapik ako ni Kuya Matthew sa balikat tapos sinuot na rin niya `yung sa kanya.

"Susuotin na." Pabiro kong sinabi.

Wow, this place is filled with mask-wearing-people.

It's kinda creeping me out.

I started roaming all over the place kasi di pa nagsisimula `yung party.

Pumunta ako sa may fountain pagkatapos I saw someone tossing coins in it.

A girl.

She was wearing a mask.

"Hi, what are you doing here?"

Mukhang nagulat siya. She didn't reply, instead she waved her hand at me and she started walking away, slowly - as if she was teasing me to follow after her.

I did.


Something inside me was telling me to follow after her. But all of the sudden, I remembered Crystal. I stopped from walking when we were already inside a garden.

"I'm sorry, I can't be with you tonight. I think I better get going inside."


Then I was shocked; her mask accidentally fell off.


There I saw Crystal Mijares - standing in front of me.


After that, a shooting star passed by. The both of us saw it. I know that because we were both looking at the sky. That moment, I wished for her.



I'm just wondering, what could it be that she wished for?

''Crystal Mijares?'' I was shocked.

I never expected for things to turn out like this.

I felt like a total idiot, like I've seen a ghost. She shook her head heavily and then she picked up her mask. As soon as it was in her grasp, she ran away. And that was the last time that I saw her that night. I went back to the ballroom hall and I found Kuya Yohann and ate M.

''Where are your masks?'' I chuckled and then kuya Yohann gave me a high five.

''Only those who aren't scared to show who they really are are those who aren't wearing masks.'' Ate M elbowed me and then she messed up my hair.

''Where have you guys been?''

I asked while fixing my hair. ''Saving hearts again, huh?''

Ate M winked at me and then she nodded. ''Of course, that's what I'm made for.''

''By the way, she was here.'' I told them knowingly.


''So you're a stalker now, huh?'' Ate M smirked at me. I laughed.

''No, it was so natural... I didn't even expect to see her here. Hey! Did you set us up?'' Ate M burst into laughter.

''Dude, seriously, you sound like a hopeless romantic!''

''Hey! I'm romantic but i'm not hopeless!'' Then I started laughing with them.

It's so nice to have kuya Yohann as my cousin.

I hurriedly left in a blink of an eye.

You know how I feel right now? I feel like I'm totally helpless. I've always been running away from him.

But when that star fell, I wished for a miracle.

Just one day where I can speak.

For all I know, it would never come true so I wished for another chance instead.

A chance where I can see him again and a chance to tell him that I am mute.

After all, people say wishes do come true. And just like how Cinderella ran away when she lost her shoes, I ran away from Shan Torresand lost my luck.

My wish came true when I found her the next day on her same painting spot right across my cedar tree.


I put down my guitar and then I stood up. I don't know why I have a feeling that everything would turn out right this time, but that's how I totally feel. And just like those in soap operas, I felt my feet walking towards her.

What is it in her that has placed me under a spell?


I was about to speak but just like what I felt at the moment, she took out a piece of paper from her colored notepad and handed it to me. ''I didn't mean to run away from you last night.''

''It's nothing, really.'' She immediately flashed me a look. ''No, it's not like that, I mean... You don't really need to say sorry.'' I smiled at her, then for the first time, I saw Crystal Mijares - smiling back at me.

Her smile is breathtaking.

Natutunaw ako.

''I'm kinda hungry, I think I'm going now?'' I smiled, and then she waved. ''Why are you waving at me? I don't want to eat alone, and if you won't come with me, I'll starve myself to death.'' I said, nicely, sweetly and sauve.


She stood up and fixed her things then she gave me an-'okay' sign. I'm really glad coz I'm going to share a meal with her. ''What do you wanna eat?'' she didn't speak instead, she pointed on the menu. ''Okay.. Got it.''

I ordered a snack for the both of us and then i started talking to her. ''So, you know Maan?'' She nodded. ''Cool! What a small world.''

She just smiled at me. Now what? ''Do you really like to paint?'' she nodded again.

''How long have you been painting?'' She showed me 4 fingers.

''Wow, that's really cool! I'm not really good in painting.. Haha.'' I was expecting that she would respond, but she just gave me another smile.

It's really nice to be here with her... You know? But one thing's really weird. It makes me uncomfortable. It's like I'm just talking to someone who's physically present but mentally absent.

She's too silent.

And I mean, awfully silent.

"You know what, I think busog na ako." I was hurt.

Can you imagine that?

I know why he stood up. He stood up because it was too silent. He stood up because he figured out that he was the only one talking. He stood up because he had enough of talking to someone who doesn't even talk back.

He stood up because he disliked the silence.

And it hurts me because I am the silence.

Kinuha ko `yung receipt namin and then I dug inside my bag to look for a ballpen. I'm glad I found one.

I hurriedly scribbled on the receipt and then I gave it to him. "Are you mad?"

He smiled. I know that smile. That looks familiar. I use that too, whenever I'm uncomfortable; whenever I'm feeling uneasy. That smile is a smile that pleads for an exit.

I feel so stupid.

I scribbled again and gave it to him; he took it, without trying to show me that he's irritated, frustrated and all other synonyms of that word.

"I have something to tell you."

He was about to speak when all of the suddenly his phone rang. He picked it up then he looked at me. "Hello? Ha? Okay. Pupunta na ako ngayon diyan." Then he looked away.

"I have to go now. Thanks for your time."

After he said this, he headed toward the exit.


He left just like that.


I tried to scream to make him stop but instead, I only muttered syllables. To be exact, what I was yelling was something lighter than air.


He never heard because I didn't even hear myself talking when all that I wanted to say was,


"Please stay."
