FIRST CHAPTER

Just Being Young

We are drunk! Like really, really drunk. Okay, fine. It’s not good to drink. I’m still seventeen, isn’t that like illegal? Well, screw them. I’m ONLY seventeen, I’m going to start college tomorrow, I’m about to take the one major that I hate so much, and my parents will be back from their little vacay. And you expect me to not get drunk? Where is justice in that?

“Hello, Earth to Melissa?” my best friend, who is as drunk as me, slurs.

I raise my bottle, stand up, and shout, “In here, beeyotch!”

“Guys, please,” the group’s resident buzzkill tugs on my shirt. Seriously, I cannot understand why the group agreed to invite Crista. I mean, she is part of the gang and all that, but she does not approve of things like this. She thinks we are being ridiculous spending all our summer money on booze and pizza. And I can just tell that she is cursing deep inside her, wishing that she just stayed home and read another one of her dad’s weird books.

In the spirit of true friendship, in spite of my extreme annoyance, I shrug Cris’ statement, and continue in my best I’m-trying-not-to-slur voice, “To all my people who are about to enter the bloody battle that is college, this is for you!” Then I chug the remaining beer from my bottle. My friends—excluding MANANG Crista, of course—applaud and chug their own bottles. All I can see are happy, drunk faces. This is the life.

The Morning After

“Melissa!”

“Hm.”

“Meeeeelissa!”

“Hmmm.”

“MELISSA!”

“Gee, quit with the all-caps. I’m up,” I rub my forehead, still closing my eyes.

“Mom and dad called, they’re going to be here in like ten minutes,” Agnes walks to my window and opens my drapes.

I squint at the bright light, “Good morning to you too, Nanny McPhee.”

“I do not appreciate the sarcasm,” my sister holds her chin up like she does every time she tries to act tough. “And besides, don’t you have an eight am class?”

AAAAAH! “What time is it? Frak, I cannot believe I forgot.” I rush out of bed in search for my phone.

“With all that drinking last night, who wouldn’t?” Agnes snorts. “There’s breakfast downstairs. I suggest you take a looooong shower. You smell like an ashtray,” then off she goes.

Agnes is our family’s own version of Crista. Little Miss Perfect, A COMPLETE BUZZKILL. She is just a year older than I am but she acts as if she is already this successful big sister who has to take care of her troubled sibling. I really hate it whenever she sticks her nose into my business. It is not my fault I found a cool group of friends while she has to spend every moment of her sad social life with her book-eating pals. I do feel bad for her sometimes, but I guess it’s all her fault. You know, she’s being such a tight…err, bottom most all the time.

I am greatly relieve to find out that it is still just a little past six. Still have plenty of time to prepare for school. Not that I am excited or anything. Please, I am not.

After taking a long shower, I change into my new pair of ripped acid-wash jeans, black tank top, and black strappy sandals that my Tita Tina sent me as a first-day-in-college present. As if your first day in college is worth celebrating. Oh well, the sandals are tres cute, I am willing to forget about their sad story.

As I am putting on really, really light make up, Agnes storms inside my room again. She is now in her I-am-a-good-student outfit of white blouse, boring denim jeans, and silver sandals that Tita also sent her. “They are here!” she announces happily as if she is announcing that Prince William decided not to marry Kate after all. “Come quick,” then she disappears again.


I lift my heavy, not-ready-for-college soul down the stairs, pass the smell of bacon and eggs, to the front of the house where my parents are standing, waiting for their luggage. Like Kuya Ben and Yaya Teri will not take them in. As if!

“Sunshine!” *insert my annoyed face here*

“Hi, dad,” I give dad a quick hug. “Mom,” a light kiss on mom’s fresh face. The trip must have done them good. They both look a lot less stressed now. Even dad looks a lot like his old self again.

“Mama, papa,” Agnes gives them the tightest hug in daughter history. I cannot keep my jaw from dropping. What is her damage?

“Sweethearts, we brought souvenirs!” mom announces proudly. “Come let’s get inside.”

“I asked yaya to prepare breakfast,” Agnes ushers mom and dad inside the house. All I can do is sigh as I follow them.


Breakfast goes on with me nibbling on my food, mom happily sharing about their trip, dad trying to steal a glance at his phone that has been vibrating non-stop, and Agnes all wide-eyed, nodding and laughing at mom’s stories. What an awful sight.

That is why I am partly grateful for my eight am class, at least I can escape this sickening view of a perfectly happy family. Forgive me for being angsty, I am just not used to seeing this plus there is that thought of school. I need a breather.

School

“Why are you late?” Marco whispers at me as I take the seat beside him. Marco asking me why I am late is a big deal. That is the guy who never arrives at a meet up without being thirty minutes late.

“My parents, remember?” I whisper back. “And did you not get hungover?”

“EHEM,” our scruffy teacher eyes us. What a good first impression. “Lady in the black top, can I see your print out?”

As I stand and walk to the front of the room, I can feel eyes on me. Not that I mind, I am used to getting called out in class. I guess it’s part of being true to one’s self, not everyone’s going to understand you. Especially the teachers.

“Here,” I hand my print out. I can see Marco smirking from his seat at the back of the class. I try to fight the urge of giving him the middle finger.

My teacher—who is he??—studies my print out, “Corpus? How are you related to Agnes?”

I should have guessed. “Sisters.”

“Really?” I swear to God, I feel like shooting his head. “Being late is not something I expected from a sister of Agnes’.”

“Well, I’m sorry to disappoint,” I murmur.

“You were saying?”

“Hm, nothing, sir,” I fake a smile. “So, can I sit now?”

“Yes, but please sit in front. Agnes always sits in front.”

I walk to the back of the room, grab my bag, then take the only empty seat in the first row. In between two strangers. So much for fate being kinder.

“I want everyone to get to know the person beside you,” my teacher, who still hasn’t introduced himself, announces. “He or she will be your activity partner for the rest of the semester.”

My eyes go wide. I glance at the back to where Marco is now smiling like a maniac to the girl beside him. Fine, she is pretty but heck, he is my friend! We promised to stick with each other.

“Ehem,” the guy beside me clears his throat. “Hello.”

I quickly snap out of my hatred with Marco and absentmindedly shake the hand the guy beside me offers.

“I’m Enrique,” the guy says in his semi-deep voice. “Rick na lang.” I study his face as he talks. Not bad. Really, really not bad. I guess Marco’s not the only one who gets lucky.

“Melissa,” I smile my sweetest, most innocent smile. “Are you from around town?”

He smiles. Oh, those gorgeous teeth. Lord, why did you not warn me? “Hindi e, Manila originally. You?”

I inhale his manly scent—I’m thinking some crazy expensive designer perfume, just sayin’—as I semi-absentmindedly brush my hair with my fingers, “Ah. I’m from here, originally.”

Rick let out a laugh. A gorgeous, handsome, good-looking laugh.

Woah, wait. I am being ridiculous. Um, hello? What have I done to the old, non-boy crazy Melissa? Old self, come back.

I tried to edit every "speaking" line but then my laptop got screwed up and I felt too lazy to do everything all over again. I hope it wouldn't be such a hassle to read through this. And I'm sorry if you hate purple 'cause I think it kinda looks good here. Teehee.

Tell me what you think about the first chapter/part, and the title, please? I'm still confused with that one.
