The Perks of Being Venice Lim - 09 8/9/11

So yeah, I'm Venice Lim. I'm 19 years old and here's the thing I've never been in a relationship. Don't get me wrong, I've had loads of crushes but I don't know why they haven't taken that second look yet. Probably because I'm not really that pretty.

If you ask me, I'm just plain average, not verging to famous even. I'm not what you'll call popular, probably the reason why I go online often, overhaul my name and personality, write amazing stuffs that I created in my head. Do online blogs as if I'm some famous cheerleader when in reality I'm just a 19 year old virgin who hasn't experienced how it is to be loved in return.

Some kind of life huh? So here I am again, doing the old tricks but this time it's true.

I'm Venice Lim.

I'm 19 years old.

Trying not to be invisible.

And this my friends is the story of my life.

Hi guys! I hope you give this a try. Thank you!

Entry No. 1

Winter Solstice. I don't know why I care about this kind of stuffs when in reality I haven't experienced anything except monsoon rains and the glaring sunshine.

One time,on my many lies over the internet, I pretended to be a hot chick from California. Then I start to get to know this Charlie dude who seems quite interested in me. Not the real me, but the "Californian" me, but I like it you know. The feeling that someone actually likes me.

One time he commented on my blog and told me to meet him, sure I would want to meet him. But he's from California, and i'm from.... well, here.

Due to my young age and underdeveloped thinking, I told him that I can't go with him since my family is celebrating "winter solstice." I never heard anything from him ever since that day.

Only to find out on my 18th birthday that Winter Solstice only happen 21st of December and not the entire winter season. Plus, people don't really celebrate solstice. That's when I started to read. But more of my lies later.

Let me first talk to you about my family. My mom is a teacher and my dad is a businessman. I have a sister named Claire and a brother named Miguel. So I don;t see why my mom and dad named their youngest daughter Venice when my older sister's name is not even Paris.

I have this best friend named Sierra, she's 19 and like me, she hasn't got one single boyfriend ever since she was born.

And then there's Duke. If you've seen movies about some popular dude who plays quarterback or read in romance novels about those guys whom you can only have in your dreams, he's that type of guy.

Once I sat beside him in Chemistry class, and he actually asked me what H2O was. Pretty stupid if you ask me, but hell he is Duke Vanderbilt for crying out loud.

Then there's good 'ole William, he's not much of a looker but he can be cute if time permits him to be. He and I had known each other since first year, too bad though his parents decided to move him to some prestigious school, since his mom got promoted. We still hang out sometimes though.

Then there's always that bad guy who will try to ruin your life just for the sake of ruining it, his name? Nate Orcino. Duke's bestfriend, and you know how rude best friends of popular guys can be. I pity Nate sometimes, thinking that he onl acts that way because no matter what he do, Duke will always be on top and he'll always be second.

But that's good thing, right?

Especially to those who isn't even on the list.

Like me.

so yeah, I introduced my characters first and will update more on what's been happening in Venice's life on the next entries. Thank you Clarisse and Feii.

Today, like any other day I wake up, walk straight to the mirror and rant about my hair, my eyes, my lips my nose and my mouth. Srsly, why am I not fvcking pretty? I don’t even ask for drop dead gorgeous looks. No. I only want the look that few guys would take a second look and say “she’s kind of cute.” That’s all I ask. But no. nothing except this, I said referring to the mirror, has been given to me.

“Mom can you please stop pretending like you’re joining Top Chefs or something? It’s just scrambled eggs.” My mom tends to exaggerate everything, maybe because being a mere housewife bores her to death.

“Best scrambled eggs in the whole world if you ask me.” Claire said in a sing-song tone. I rolled my eyes. Claire has and will always be household favorite, she’s sweet and her being sweet gained her the power to manipulate everyone, except Miguel and me in that case.

Miguel and I are twins, so we’re pretty bummed when my dad got kicked out of his old job and we have to share a room instead, because Claire said she’s already a lady and that she needs more privacy. What am I then? Am I not going through maturity too?

“Your constant tapping on your laptop makes me squirm to death.” Miguel said directing all his hatred on me.

“Well I’m sorry for having a life Migs.”

“Sorry for having a life outside the cyberworld.” He retorted.

We went to school with the usual bickering and as always Claire cannot help not to look in the mirror every two minutes.

“I imagine the day when she looks at it and her face turns into a witch.” Said Sierra.

In school Claire is a whole new person. If being beautiful, tall, perfect curves, dancer, top student and student body president is what you define as perfect then that’s perfect little Claire.

We walked behind her and had too watch, in our utter dismay, Duke Vanderbilt and her exchange (forgive my indecency) tongue. If only mom can see her now.

“Yo S and V.” William slapped out backs a little too hard.

“Drop the slang Will, it’s not like you’re Nate Orcino.”

“Speaking of Nate, have you heard he asked Claire to be his prom date and guess what you sister said?”

“Of course she won’t go out with Nate, he has Duke.”

“Believe it or not she said yes.”

“Ewww. That sl ut!”

“I know right.”

“Here’s my stop.” Said Sierra as she bid both William and I good buy. “Tell Migs I said hi.”

We just laughed, Sierra has this huge crush on Miguel that she will do anything just to be his prom date. In anything I mean, pay him per hour, massage him the whole day, clean his room for a whole month. Get the picture?

“So…” William said out of the blue. “Will you go to prom?”

“If somebody asks me, I will. But I think that will be next to impossible.”

“In that case… will you…”

“Hey! Hey!!!!!! Lim!” I know it sounds crazy but my body just shivered and then died and went to heaven when I heard him say my name surname.

“Why is Duke Vanderbilt calling you?” William asked his eyebrows raised.

How will I know? I don’t even know he knows my name let alone surname.

He caught my arm and brushed his hair with his fingers.

“Hey, you’re Claire’s sister right?”

Claire? Claire who? The one you’ve been kissing just a few minutes back?

“Yeah.”

“Hey…”

“It’s Venice.”

“Huh?”

“My name is Venice not hey.”

He rolled his eyes like I’m some troll from Mars, “Right, so I am wondering if…”

He stops then smiled that killer smile.

“Will you go to the prom with me?”

Am I hallucinating?

Did Duke Vanderbit really asked that?

So Duke Vanderbilt just asked me out to prom. Why is that? Probably because:

A.   He wants to get some revenge by dating his ex’s sister
B.   Claire said yes to Nate
C.   He wants to get some revenge by dating his ex’s sister
D.   He and Claire broke up
E.   He wants to get some revenge by dating his ex’s sister
F.   He really wants to go out with me
G.   Letters A, C and E

I for one think its F but reality is much too clever for me to fool.

“G.” said Sierra without second thoughts.

“ Definitely G” came in William’s voice

“Why are there still options B D and F?”

I sighed, so Duke didn’t really ask me because of my drop dead gorgeous looks.

By Monday, with Prom only a day away, my name, dare I say it, Venice Lim became the most popular name in East Coast Gilligan High.

Why?

Because I am Duke Vanderbilt’s prom date.

I, Venice Cassandra Sy Lim is Denver Kenneth Vanderbilt’s date. I cannot even describe how exciting it is until I wrote it in a large piece of cloth and hang it on my bedroom wall.

I didn’t mind my blog few weeks back for fear that if I go with my usual lies over the internet, then everything will all be a dream.

I can hear Claire’s sobs from across our room and believe me I do feel sorry for her, but due to her “unintended” manipulativeness (if ever there’s such a word, which I know there isn’t) I’m more happy than ever to gloat what I achieved over dinner.

Here’s the thing, Miguel pretty much rub it on her face too.

“Claire dear, why are your eyes so puffy?”

“Too much mascara.”

“Cried probably.”

Claire shot me the look as if saying, “I’ll-tear-you-apart-b1tch.”

Watch me Claire. I’m taking over your life.  :P

“Mom. Can you please give me  money, I’m buying myself a prom dress.”

“Wow Venice I didn’t know you’re into those kinds of stuff.”

“Duke Vanderbilt asked me.” I said emphasizing the word Duke to Claire, to be honest it almost sounded like I’m seducing her.

She pretty much had it, slammed her plate and cried all the way up to her room.

“That’s harsh Venice!” mom said and rushed her way up to follow Claire.

Of course mom will always take her side.

“Way to go Lim.”

It’s actually a bit of a blow that we have morning classes the night of our prom. I just bought myself a dress, mom obviously didn’t give me money so I asked dad to buy me instead. He and mom are divorced.

I saw William and Sierra near their lockers busy talking about I don’t know what, Miguel took Sierra’s proposition that if he will be her date then she will buy him an iTouch. Sierra’s family, I forgot to mention, is filthy rich.

I was about to call them when I heard the familiar sobs and wailing, the very same thing I heard every day and night in our dwelling.

“OMG what will I do!!! It’s all your fault!”

“Maybe you read it wrong!”

B1tch! Prom hasn’t start yet and she’s now snaking her way back to Duke!

“My life is ruined!!!!”

“oh god! I honestly thought that day was safe!”

Safe?

That day was safe?

I leaned closer to hear and understand what they’re saying.

“HOW ON EARTH WILL I TELL MY MOM THAT I’M PREGNANT!”

Buuuuuurrrrrrrrrnnnnnnn!

That’s how I watched, no, heard rather, Claire’s perfect life shatter and vanish into thin air.

*insert evil and monstrous laugh here*

I know I'm not making much sense about the not famous part, but believe me we'll get there. ;D

Thank you Bee, Ianne and Inevitable. :)

Entry No 3 Part 2

December 23 STILL

I sing song my way back to our classroom, this will be one hell of a prom night. I immediately thank the heavens for answering my prayers this Christmas.

I am so happy I almost sang, "Claire's social life is already dead." out loud.

"You're happy."

"Never been better."

"Duke Vanderbilt?"

"Duke Vanderbilt."

No one can ruin my mood that day, even when I hear girls talking about what a sl ut I am for going after my sister's ex boyfriend.

Nope. Nothing can ever ruin my mood.

Or so I thought.

When I got home with Miguel we were both excited. On our way home, we imagined play by play how mom will react on her favorite girl's news when she will tell her "I know I'm only 18 mom but yeah, I'm pregnant."

Few of our many conclusions were; 1. Mom will slap her, 2. Mom will yell at her, 3. Mom will scream her disappointment on her face, 4. Mom will scream her lungs out telling her she's a sl ut, and 5. (which is the most convenient for us all) Mom will send Claire to dad.

I know Miguel and I are sooooo being mean, but she deserves to be excommunicated from mom once in a while. I mean, it's as if she's the only child in mom's eyes.

Miguel and I exchanged looks when we saw Duke, Claire and my mom talking in our living room.

Shoot! Popcorns would have been perfect.

"REALLY??? YOU ARE REALLY PREGNANT??"

Am I hearing everything right?

"I'M HAVING A GRANDCHILD!!!"

Am I hallucinating?

Please tell me I'm hallucinating.

Please someone....

wake me up!!!!!!!!!

This is total nightmare!

"Thank you!!"

THANK YOU???!!!!

"I'm afraid you two won't be attending prom tonight. We need to plan your wedding."

And I can see Claire's perfect blue eyes gaze on mine!

One day, I'll kill that b1tch.

She smiled sweetly as if trying to mock me.

But she's not even the first person I want to strangle this very moment. Nope she only comes second. First place will go to Duke Vanderbilt.

Even though I know that Duke only asked me to get revenge I still feel betrayed. You can't blame me. For once I'm significant. For once in my life I can hear my name being whispered by the corridor.

So I followed Duke when he excused himself to the bathroom.

"User!"

He looked at me, raised his eyebrows and almost laughed, "Hey I thought you knew this was all about your sister."

Ok that came out way too quick. I was hoping for a longer drama convo, you know the one where he'll say sorry first and I'll play hard-to-get then he'll beg on his knees for my forgiveness and stuff.

"Well..."

"You knew all along Venice."

"Coz......"

I stuttered. Damn! Why do I always get to be the loser!

"I was..."

Silence.

"Can I go and pee now??"

I nodded.

Fvck this!!!!!!

Morning after that, Miguel and I went to the mall to relax ourselves. Srsly we're tired of mom asking ask to do this and do that when in fact the bride to be isn't even moving a fingernail.

I saw the school's usual crowd there.

They no longer look at me the way they do yesterday.

They don't go on whispering that Venice Lim is Duke Vanderbilt's prom date.

No....

No more gossips.

Because we didn't even attend prom.

Probably nobody else except Miguel, Sierra and William knows my name.

I, Venice Lim, hot and popular yesterday,

gone today.

I am again insignificant,

inexistent,

invisible.

*slash wrist*

Thank you Aj. :)
