I reminisced being that little again like Natalie.
And Matteo being the arrogant brat. HAHA.

It was the last day of classes, but there is something bigger happening.

Natalie looked up to the clock. A few minutes pass two. In less than half an hour, she would be out of this room, dancing around the playground with her friends and giggling like hyenas. They would wait for their fetchers whilst greeting her a happy birthday.

She told no one about it. Natalie even asked the teachers not to say a word about it, though there was a noticeable star in her notebook. It was a present for being a fine girl for the whole school year.

Fifteen more minutes.

Anya, the one on her left, was casually humming the birthday song. Too conspicuous. The other person on her side was giving her weird glances.

Ria, the one on her right, could barely keep her butt on the chair. She was clutching the arm rest tightly, her knuckles turning white. Natalie bets she would be the first to go out of the classroom scream like a banshee.

Natalie tapped her feet, catching the eye of Ms. Ferolina. She was giving them last minute speeches. Natalie hated farewells; the long two-month vacation was waiting for her with open arms. Her lips turned to random twists before settling to a thin line.

The bell rang loudly. Kids squealed as they grabbed their bags and ran outside. Anya and Ria were a part of the overjoyed throng. Natalie, being the good girl she was, walked out like it was a regular school day.

Someone blocked her path.

It was unfair being so tall for eight years old, Natalie muttered under her breath. Her eyebrow rose a few millimeters as she saw Matteo grinning from ear to ear. Her foul expression turned to a curious one.

"Happy birthday."

Her jaw dropped a little. She was sure nobody knows it. Kids have short attention spans, Natalie quoted her mother. Her eye then dropped to the big paper bag Matteo was holding out.

"Thank.. You?" Matteo passed the gift to her small hands. It was shaking; Matteo noticed it and laughed.

"It's the last day. I won't bite." He even poked her cheek. "I hope we can be friends." Matteo held his hand out.

It was all too fast. Friends? After two years of being archenemies? But the time of being toddlers was gone. They were now growing; as they bloom alongside each other, the distance between them widens. Maybe friends wouldn't be so bad.

"Do you think my hair still looks pretty?" Natalie whispered, too shy to let their teachers hear. Her head dropped; she was being silly. This was Matteo we're talking about, selfish, boisterous--

"You're hair will always be the prettiest."

It was all it took for Natalie to give him a bear hug. She jumped to him, her arms in his neck and her head resting on his shoulder. He did not smell like sweat. Natalie took in the sweet scent and smiled.

Ms. Ferolina and Ms. Silva could not help but be awed by the sudden change of course. The two looked at the kids with starry eyes. Deep inside, they were sure that at one point, the roads in their lives would merge.
