Red pieces of paper were scattered on the rubbery mat.

Ms. Silva was looking around the room, smiling as she caught sight of the cute valentine cards made by her students. The occassion really caught them; she never thought kids would mind celebrating this.

Primary level students (Grades 1-3) were all huddled inside a large room divided only by blackboards. Now, the divisions were pushed so Ms. Silva could supervise them easily. As she was doing her rounds, Ms. Silva heard 'Wow' from the kids.

Natalie was the star again. The heart in her card was big and almost proportional to the parchment. Around it, glitter were splattered, giving the card a certain glow. Ms. Silva could see the envious looks of the others.

"To whom are you going to give that card?" Yanyan, a girl with glue in her face, asked. Natalie touched the heart.

"I will give it to the one who will give their work to me." Natalie proudly said. "Because I don't want to lose my heart to someone else." She quoted a line from some movie her sister was watching during the past weekend.

"You're watching chick flicks, aren't you?" Matteo revealed himself from the throng of kids. Natalie wisely ignored him; the boy was too arrogant for his own good. He would just ruin it all again.

Later at lunch, Natalie sat with her friends. There was a flurry of giggles and teasing; most of the young boys had given their cards to the girls they like. Natalie hid her sadness; she has not yet received anything today.

"Excuse me?" Silence answered the intruder. The girls looked at one of their classmates, Lorenzo. He was thin, but smart-looking. In his hand was a card and a spray of flowers. The girls' mouths turned to an o; no boy has given any girl a flower. Lorenzo walked closer and handed his presents to Natalie.

"Happy heart's day, Natalie."

Natalie's hands were shaking as she took the card and the flowers. She took her work from behind her and passed it to him. In addition to that, Natalie gave him a hug. She was overjoyed; she was the only one who received flowers today!

"Thank you!"

From the opposite side of the room, Matteo watched, his lips dropped to a frown. Somebody has got her before him. His gaze lingered to the rose (His brother said it was the best choice. Natalie would surely forgive him for the hair-stomping accident last year.) and to the card. He dropped them to the bushes and sighed wistfully.

Ms. Silva stared as Matteo's little heart break a little. First heartbreaks really got the worst blows.

Nice background info on the characters. First we get the pre-school days , then elementary. We're seeing how they changed slowly. Although that mud in sneakers part and wiping it on the sneakers part was pretty messed up on Matteo's part. It's like a foreshadowing of how mischievious he's gonna be right?
