After several days of hard labour, she felt like a new person. Although she wasn't quite sure if knowing how to fish with fish traps or harvesting strawberries counted as life altering moments, she's never felt more peaceful in her life. She sat outside the old house trying to breathe in the cold winter air but not even the weather could change her mood. She was finally at peace with herself and it seemed that all her problems where far away from her now.
“Well..they are...one's in KAIST and the other was in Seattle.” She thought to herself.
“Aisshhh..Enough of all this emo stuff..I'm tried and I'm going to sleep.”
“No you're not...” Grandfather, who had just come back from a hard day's work as well, almost startled her.
“Harabeoji...You're here..”
“Yes...And I brought a friend along with me...”
“Really?” Her voice sounding a bit unsure. She'd never met any of Harabeoji's friends and she always thought it was for the best since they probably were all elders, which all spoke with a distinct accent she could never get herself to understand. She was starting to conjure up some excuse not to stay longer than she would like to when suddenly she realized Grandfather was all alone.
“Meet my friend.” From his back he brought out a bottle of soju
1.
They laugh at his attempt at being funny. It was a refreshing thought that even if Grandfather looked so serious during work, he still had his playful side of him.
“Come on Agasshi...bring out some glasses...I'll bring out the table...”
“Yes..Harabeoji...” The sudden jolt of excitement the bottle of soju had on her surprised her. Back in Seattle, even if most of her friends spent their Friday nights and most of Saturday mornings getting wasted, she was always sober. Since Jay didn't like drinking that much she didn't really pay much attention to it. And even in college, she tried her best to stay away from them for fear of cheating on him. As she reached for the glasses on the kitchen's cupboard, she finally realized that for the past 5 or so years her life had revolved and depended on one person. She smiled as she went out and saw harabeoji opening the bottle of s0ju excitedly.
“Hurry Agasshi...place those glasses here.” She did as she was told and sat on the opposite end of the table. While most people would find it awkward and inappropriate to be drinking alone with a man as old as grandfather was, she didn't really care and started pouring some alcohol in both of their glasses.
“Harabeoji! Lets toast...”
“What shall we toast to?”
“Hmmm..I toast to good health!”
“Okay then... I toast to that as well.” The taste of the smooth soju down their throats was refreshing and after a few more glasses, they started to feel more comfortable with each other.
“Agasshi...” Grandfather said suddenly starting to engage in a more personal conversation.
“ You're from the city right? What's a little kiddo like you doing in a place like this?”
“I'm not sure actually..”
“How can you be not sure? You're not a fugitive are you?”She can't believe she was having this kind of talk with someone who one, was relatively still a stranger and two, one that was way out of her age group. It might have been her low tolerance in alcohol or just the sincere concerned tone that came out of the old man's voice.
“Fugitive? You can say that Harabeoji...trying to run away...run away from alllllllll my problems!!!”
“Aisssshhh...” Grandfather suddenly turned sober and had now put on a disappointed face. She poured her glass with the remaining suju.
“Aiggooo...You shouldn't run away from your problems...or else...Aisshhhh....This is going to take a lot more than just bottle...Go! Buy some from the store.” Despite the fact that she was still far from sober and that she was from the city, she obediently went out to find herself some soju at the nearby town.
“Convenience Store...Convenience store...” She repeated over and over again as she searched for an open store to buy the soju grandfather requested.
“Aisssshhh..If I wasn't sober when I left the house...I'm definitely sober now...” She rubbed her hands together, trying to keep them warm. After drinking so much with grandfather she didn't realize how cold it had gotten outside and decided to go out with nothing on but her pajamas and earmuffs. She put her hands in between her ears and her bunny earmuffs but it still felt cold.
“If I don't find a store soon, I'll freeze to death....”After a few minutes of walking around she finally spotted a 24 hour convenience store. As soon as she went in, she went straight to the store's cooler. She also taught of getting something to munch on for their midnight snack.
There where about 20 kinds of chips that were perfectly lined up on shelves. But before she could even pick out her choices, there was a sight that she had thought she'd gotten away from me.
“God...Jay...you sure are everywhere nowadays.” A cardboard picture of Jay's head was bopping at the aisle along with his other bandmates endorsing some obscure shrimp snack which its name she couldn't configure since it was written in Thai.
“Aissshhh...Forget about it..I already have what I came for anyway...” Her way home was a bit eerie. Although she practically took the same path on the way to the town, she never noticed the bombardment of Idol endorsements. She had thought that by going to the countryside she could get rid of any trace of the Idol world in her life. She had thought that after a week without the kind of lifestyle lingering around her, she could jump-start her life back to something more normal or at the very least something that resembled her life back in Seattle. But anywhere she look, From Jay's boybanders to Minsul's talents, they were just everywhere. She felt like she was in some kind of nightmare, where instead of the boogie man and other monsters, Perfectly beautiful idols were chasing after her, trying to suck her into their world of scandals, lies, and depression. In her pajamas, she ran as fast as she could out of the town, not looking anywhere but straight ahead.
“Harabeoji!..” She yelled even before she could see grandfather's shadow.
“Harabeoji!Harebeoji! I have the....” But as soon as she reached home she saw Harabeoji's tired body lying flat near the table. She smiled at the sight of grandfather, completely asleep. She thought of waking him up but instead she ended up lying down in the cold outdoors just as he did.
“Aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissssssssssssh! Harabeoji...I think you're right, there's no point in running away...They'll just come running after you wherever you go...Aigooo.!” And feeling the freezing air of the winter, she closed her eyes for a minute trying to recover the peace she once had exactly an hour before.

After being bed ridden for 3 days, she was finally out with Jingsang and Wonshin in the cold winter air. Although she and grandfather had been scolded by grandmother a thousand times about staying out in the cold, she couldn't seem to resist. And it was especially hard that day when the two most adorable kids in town practically dragged her out of bed.
“Hurry Unnie2!!!!...We have to go fast.” Wonhsin was getting particularly anxious today. Although she always acted impatient and impulsive, she didn't understand what Wonshin wanted to do at 7 in the morning for.
“Wonshin-a! Why are you in such a hurry? With the rice paddies frozen, there's no need to rush into anything today...” But even as she reasoned with her, Wonshin grabbed both her arms and was literally dragging her along. Jingsang, on the other hand, just happily tagged along to her sister. He was happy to just finally be outside and not have to work. And after being incapacitated and have these kids do the chores on their own, she suddenly felt guilty for giving them such a hard time.
“Okay..Okay...Let's make a deal.” Wonshin stopped on her tracks and looked at her intently, still not letting go of her grip.
“ I promise to walk faster without any complaints, but first you have to tell me where were going and what were going to do once we get there.”She was anticipating Wonshin's reply. She had been so excited when she entered her room and now even more so. She was curious at what she had planned for them that morning. She even thought that they were planning to do something special for her, since she was after all still there guests. But to her surprise Jingsang, who had picked up a branch along the way and started playing with it, suddenly answered her.
“Aissshhh... That kid? She wants to see Big Bang!!!Aissshhh”
“Big Bang?” Although it sounded familiar, she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
“All this for candy...Big Bang's a kind of gum right?” She turned around to face Jingsang, who was trying hard to contain her laughter, and then instinctively turned towards Wonshin, who was now pouting her lips in disagreement. The little girl let go of her arms and placed them on her waist. She wasn't sure what she had said wrong, but she was sure that she knew was Big Bang was and she wasn't about to give up.
“Oh! Of course..Big Bang!..But I don't think Halmeonji would be okay with you eating chocolate for breakfast.” Jingsang was now rolling on the ground while Wonshin refused to take her glare off her.
“I can't believe you don't know who BIG BANG is!
"She's right Noona... I don't like them and even I know who they are.”
“Oh...so Big Bang's a person” She thought to herself as she started scratching her head.
“Oh!” Finally remembering who they were, her sudden excitement turned to disappointment. Although she didn't have anything against Minsul's boys, she wasn't particularly fond of them either due to the simple fact that they were Idols. In her eyes, they were all the same, ambitious teens who think that the whole world revolves around them.
“ Noona...” Jingsang poked her from behind with his stick and whispered to her.
“Noona...try to look excited about it...She's a total fan girl and its the only way to get her off your back.”And he wasn't kidding. Wonshin refused to move an inch until she acknowledges her favourite Idol's existence. She stomped her feet and crossed her arms as she intently looked at her.
“Hihihi...” She laughed nervously as she tried to redeem herself in front of the extremely fanatic Wonshin.
“ I was just kidding! Of course I know who BigBang is...There's Seunghyun, Little Seunghyun, Jiyoungie....” But before she could even finish enumerating the kids she had just met a month ago,Wonshin grabbed her skirt and started pulling her again.
“Ok...Ok...I'm hurrying up...My skirt's going to turn into a bed cover if you won't stop pulling it.”
“Sorry Unnie...” Although Wonshin had already let go of her, she felt as if she was still pulling her since she was now running at the same pace as her eager dongseang.
“But I don't see what's Big Bang got to do with all this..”
“Noona...”Jingsang, who has also started to run, said in between breaths.
“ Family Outing is filming two houses away. Daesung is there apparently.”
“But were at least 10 meters away already.”
“Unnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnniiieeeeee!!!” She never thought such deafening scream could come from a little girl.
“Unnniiiieeee!” Wonshin screamed again when she failed to respond.
“What is it?”
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! There!!! There!!!! It's Daesung Oppa.”
While Wonshin took pictures of her Idol from an impossibly far angle, Jingsang sat on the side, with his legs crossed, and his chin resting on his hand.
“I don't get why they're so popular.”
“That makes two of us.” She sat beside him, amazed by his disinterest in the topic. It was something new for a change. It wasn't everyday that she comes across someone who didn't worship this kind of lifestyle. Jingsang leaned towards her to avoid causing Wonshin to throw a tantrum.
“Noona, you don't like them too?”
“Well...” She wasn't sure how to respond to him. Although she might have cursed these Idols a couple of times in the past, it dawned upon her that she never gave those kids a chance for her to like them. She spent most of her time either trying to avoid them or acting aloof whenever they were around.
“I'm not sure, Why? don't you?”
“Nah... I don't even get why she likes them so much”
“Aniyo..There's more to them than colourful clothing and fancy choreography” At the very last minute she decided to, for once, and probably for the last time, come to their defense.
“I mean.. If you look at it...They're actually just like you... Someone who loves music and enjoys playing them.”
“Aigooo! Noona! Don't tell me you're secretly a fan too?”
“I didn't mean it that way...I just don't think its good for a kid like you to judge people by how they look or what they do...” She realized at that moment that she should be taking her own advice. It might have been true that her relationship with Jay withered because of that world, but it gave her no right to push these kinds of people away. And with her only friends coming from that particular industry, she was merely making her world smaller. She could run all the way to the North Korea and they would probably still be there.
“Like Coke or Pepsi, a Global product of some sort.” She said to herself as she observed Wonshin, who was ready to faint everytime she got a glimpse of her idols.
“!@#$” She said under her breath.
“That's it” Both kids looked at her as she started searching her pockets for her phone.
“Unnie? Is something wrong?”
“My...my...Never mind...Come on kids, we have to go back home...Unnie needs to talk to someone..hurry.”She quickly stood up and grabbed both Jingsang and Wonshin.
“Unniiiiiieeee!!!! Why?
?!!! I don't want to go yet.... I want to see Daesung oppa.”
“Wonshin-a!!!! Haven't you seen enough of him already?” Jingsang decided to help his noona by helping her drag her little sister along.
“I promise to make it up to you Wonshin... Please trust Unnie... We need to hurry.”***
