Is Man naturally born good or evil?

this is my topic presentation in our Philosophy class..

I've already knew my classmate's opinions..and we agreed that no one can change one's opinion..('coz two students kind have a debate)

..in my opinion, man is naturally born good. Because when God created everything, He always says in the end..
"and it was good.."

that's my opinion..what's yours?

The good in "and it was good" is an adverb, meaning he did good of his job of making humans.

The good you're talking about of man being born, is an adjective referring to the man born.

Men are born neutral. It only depends upon what he learns that decides whether he will be good or evil in the end.

but the good i'm talking about here is good in the sense that..no sin at birth..
..'coz God did not create sin..right?..

This question is rather deceptive because there are so many factors that will affect how you would define as naturally "good" or "evil"

If a man is born from obscurity and has not been tainted by modern civilization's benefits such as formal education, morality, civilized interaction, the outcome will be rather something different. Men are very adaptive beings, they will learn from what his surroundings teach him to be.

Upon birth, humans are like blank slates. They start out at point zero, morally neutral.

Babies may not go around maniacally killing innocent civilians, but they don't do outreach programs either. Not all babies share their toys or their milk bottle, y'know.

Moral inclination depends upon the things that are slowly being written on the blank slates.

I believe humans are born naturally "good" because we are made in the image and likeness of God.  God is always good, nothing "evil/bad" can come from Him.

Kaya nga, I think it's called "fall into sin" kasi naturally we are good inside

Suppose I was a baby who died upon birth. Do I automatically go to Heaven because I was "good by default"? If that was so, then infant death would have been a very convenient way to get to the Promised Land.

but yes, it's also true that what's evil is when we give in to temptation to prefer a lower good over a higher good.

man is naturally born good but there are factors which made him do evil thing thus making him evil.

we were made good. the Lord has made us so. BUT because of Adam and Eve's mistake, SIN was embedded into our flesh, therefore when we were born, we were evil.
i believe it's called original sin by the Catholic church.

- There is nothing in the intellect which did not pass first through the senses.

Starting as a blank slates upon birth is beside the point and largely irrelevant when we talk about the goodness or bad-ness of persons.


The basis of goodness or badness among human beings does not lie on knowledge or on will but on the human person's ontological construct.

Sa madaling salita, infants, retarded people, even psychopaths are naturally good not on the basis of their actions or capacity to intellectualize but on the basis of their being.

they're humans, and they're made after the image and likeness of God.

I think Man is naturally born "Good" nor "evil".

Because the diffence Good and Evil depends on a person's wisdom.
